150 PAGES. 150 KILLERS. ONE NAME AT THE TOP.
Inspector Mercer found the first page folded inside a timetable on the night train. A hundred and sixty names in a clerk's hand, and a tick in the margin beside one of them.
He has since found a hundred and forty-nine more.
They are contracts. Somebody writes the list. Somebody else does the work. Mercer can read them now, one fact at a time, and he is running out of nights. He is asking you to finish it.
HOW IT WORKS
Every page is one contract: a hundred and sixty suspects, and six true facts about the killer hiding among them.
The killer's name contains the letter K. The killer is somewhere on lines 4 to 11. The name just before the killer starts with M.
Cross out every name the facts rule out. One will be left standing. Write it down and turn the page.
No grids. No logic tables. Nothing to learn before you start. Read a sentence, cross out a name.
TWO ORDERS NOBODY POINTS OUT
Every page in this book carries two standing orders, and they are never mentioned in the six facts. You have to remember them yourself.
A name with MINE buried in its spelling takes out the two names before it and the two after. A name with LINE buried in its spelling wipes out its whole printed row.
Carmine. Pauline. Jasmine. Adeline. They sit in the list looking like anybody else, and they are the reason two readers get two different answers.
AND THEN THE LAST SIX
Every killer you find goes into the Register at the back of the book. Fill all hundred and fifty lines and six last facts are worked on your own handwriting. The name they leave standing has been signing the others' orders all along.
INSIDE THE BOOK:
- 150 self-contained cases, one to a page. Solve one over a coffee, or lose an evening to six
- 900 clues, and no two pages share the same six
- Take the facts in any order you like. You land on the same killer either way
- A running story told by Inspector Mercer, not just a stack of name lists
- A hand-filled Register that turns into the final puzzle
- Every answer at the back, printed upside down, so nothing is spoiled by accident
- Generous line spacing, made to be worked with a pen
WHO IT IS FOR:
Adults who like a murder mystery they can hold a pen to. Anyone who has finished the logic-grid books and wants something that reads like a case instead of a worksheet. Long journeys, waiting rooms, the hour before sleep.
Every puzzle in this book has exactly one answer, and every clue in it is needed. Machine-checked, page by page.
One of them did it. Go and find out which.
