"Narrative of William W. Brown A Fugitive Slave Written by Himself"
"Narrative of the Life of J. D. Green A Runaway Slave from Kentucky"

Both William W. Brown and Jacob Green had daring and amazing adventures to leave the life of slavery. Contained herein, are the tales of their leaving, different scenarios, but one goal, to get off of the plantation. In their personally written accounts, both have documented their decision and escapes in a particularly meditative manner and embraced with poetic justice toward their slaveowners. Detailing the minute description of each of their own travel experiences while hidden by those who wished to see these men gain their freedoms. No one could have been better fitted than either man to enjoy writing and documenting their true stories to transmit the provocative enjoyment of getting out of slavery. For though they were slaves, they he took their chances, and leaving the abuse, yet comfort behind of their situations, both literally decided to head out to freedom.

They were careful and accurate observers with a gift of piquant originality in writing the story of each of their newfound freedom. The play on words by either of their writings were keen and nimble, yet they fancy in that each story is well balanced by their native common sense that it does not run away with them as they develop their stories. Vastly different, never met, yet the same goal. Both men’s inquisitiveness into the ways of their storytelling exacerbated their need to develop a picture of the subject for the reader in their minds. The kindly and sympathetic spirit constantly manifest in their pages are very attractive, and the fellowship one gains with each, through their written words, is both delightful and wholesome.

It is believed that nothing essential has been sacrificed, and that the narrative in this form will be found lively, informing, and thoroughly suspenseful as well as enjoyable. I should also note that the original writings and spellings within are, in the exact language used back in their times, and also at times, words which were spelled differently, or through their ignorance, compare drastically from today’s modern acceptable language. Then again, each realized that hiding or sugarcoating of the truth of what slavery was about and slavery’s undesirable effects on all would do no justice if blindly softened. Sometimes the truth hurts, but in today’s world, we must learn to never allow history to repeat itself ever again regarding the issue of slavery.
