Beyond the Politics of Contempt: Practical Steps to Build Positive Relationships in Divided Times

Description:

Are you discouraged by events in our country and the world? Does consuming the news bring you down and leave you wanting to shut it off? Have your relationships with friends or family been negatively affected by politics? Do you feel helpless to do anything about it?

"In
Beyond the Politics of Contempt, Teschner, Malow, and Robinson offer nourishment for America's hungry soul. You'll discover, in invitingly bite-sized chunks, a cogent analysis of how we became so polarized. Diverse in their politics and rich in expertise, these authors add in generous dollops of storytelling where they examine their own assumptions and biases, often with surprising outcomes. Then, they challenge us with intriguing exercises to explore our own role in today's political dynamic. Take them up on the challenge. Use this book to get together with colleagues or cousins, neighbors or strangers, friends or frenemies, and explore the art of listening to understand."

—Susan Clark, coauthor of
Slow Democracy: Rediscovering Community, Bringing Decision Making Back Home

In a climate of widespread contempt and even hatred for people who disagree politically, we can each make important contributions to better our lives, our relationships, and our country. We can stand up for what we believe while also building bridges across the political divide. While many fear for our nation's future, there are practical steps we can each take to build hope for a better America. The book includes:
  1. Skills for greater self-awareness of how our reactions to political events and others impact our health and well-being;
  2. Practical ways to mend relationships torn apart by politics and to empower yourself and others when difficult conversations arise;
  3. Steps to integrate political activism and bridge building; and
  4. Actions to rebuild a national culture of kindness, dignity, and respect.

Review

"As someone who has long advocated that we elevate our values to sacred status, I was excited to see these authors bring this approach to addressing the national political divide. Living our values is an important first step to better understand how we treat and lead others and how we are being manipulated in unhealthy ways. This book includes practical ways to manage difficult conversations with courage and perseverance and help create a better political environment that can benefit us all. If you want to find ways to feel better about yourself and our country, read this book!"

-Scott Mautz, author of The Mentally Strong Leader

"Packed with insight, grounded in facts, and bursting with practical actions, this book hands citizens the keys to take control, step up, and make a difference in their communities. Feeling overwhelmed by the toxic polarization in our country? Tired of the stress, the division, and the urge to retreat? This book is a wake-up call. It doesn't just explain how we got here-it shows what we can do, starting now. No more doom-scrolling. No more sitting on the sidelines. This is a roadmap to bring us out of the chaos-and toward a better way forward for all of us."

-Gary Holland, Braver Angels director of the Office of Field Operations and Connecticut state coordinator

"These are challenging times for our country with declines in trust of both neighbors and democratic institutions. But, as Robert Putnam and I have documented, we faced similar difficulties a century ago. But we overcame them then, and we can do it again. The authors of Beyond the Politics of Contempt lay out clear steps to help make it happen!"

-Shaylyn Romney Garrett, coauthor of The Upswing: How America Came Together a Century Ago and How We Can Do It Again

"During my years in politics, I have witnessed firsthand the decline in voter trust of government and elected officials. This led me to invite Braver Angels to conduct a series of workshops to help legislators work better across the aisle and more constructively manage difficult conversations with constituents. I am excited that Doug Teschner, who led this effort, has stepped up to author this book and take this important work to people across the country. We all need to find better ways to engage respectfully and listen to each other, and this book offers many positive suggestions that can make our lives and politics better."

-Hon. Sherman Packard (R), Speaker of the NH House of Representatives

"Doug Teschner and Beth Malow bring their formidable experience to bear in this timely and helpful book, including Doug's experience in politics, diplomacy, and consulting; Beth's experience as a physician helping children with complex neurological problems; and their work with Braver Angels. They offer guidance and resources to help people move from intense disagreement and hostility to find common ground and common purpose. Thanks to them for their courage and wisdom."

-The Rt. Rev. Mark Beckwith, retired bishop of Newark (Episcopal), Braver Faith of Braver Angels co-chair, and author of Seeing the Unseen: Beyond Prejudices, Paradigms, and Party Lines

5.0 out of 5 stars An antidote to despair

J.B. · October 12, 2025

Are you unhappy with the quality of our political discourse? Are you looking for something you can do in your small corner of the world to repair our frayed social fabric? If yes, this is the book for you. Doug Teschner, Beth Malow, and Becky Robinson offer a highly readable prescription for resurrecting our ability to have constructive conversations with those with whom we disagree. This step-by-step guide to disagreeing better is based on the techniques of Braver Angels, a national organization that's leading the nation’s largest cross-partisan, volunteer-led movement to bridge the partisan divide and strengthen our democratic republic. Rich in resources and references, the book shines with the personal stories of Doug, Beth, and Becky--the challenges they've faced in walking the talk and the solutions they've discovered in doing their part to contribute to a more perfect union.

This book is a one-of-a-kind guide to becoming personally involved in building bridges in a polarized world. It offers personal stories and sound skills for communicating across the divide, along with inspiration that will keep you from giving into discouragement. The authors have practiced what they are preaching here, and it shows on every page. They are red and blue Americans who are lighting the path away from contempt and towards connection and respect. Bravo!

As our nation faces increasing division and unrest, Beyond the Politics of Contempt offers practical guidance for those seeking to create a more hopeful future. The authors share their insights and experiences to improve the way we think about people who disagree with us. While changing national politics is beyond our individual reach, the book emphasizes the power of changing our own actions by shifting our perspectives and behaviors. As we do this, we help repair our frayed social fabric. The book encourages us to treat every person we meet with dignity, respect, and curiosity. I highly recommend this book and recommend if for book clubs using the questions provided at the end of each chapter.

If you don't want to be sticking your head in the sand or wringing your hands with despair about the political divide in this country, and have concluded you want to do something about it, start by reading this book.In a nutshell, the most effective thing to do is to actively practice looking at things from another point of view than your own. In your own mind, play the devil's advocate to all of your gut reactions.Then talk to your neighbor. Listen without thinking about what you want to say next. Listen to learn what their core values are. Listen without the intention of changing their mind. See if you can leave the door open for having another conversation with them another day.Repeat this process with another neighbor, and then another. Don’t stop.

Beyond the Politics of Contempt is timely and useful. It is not inflammatory. It does not generate exhilaration by tearing down one's political opponents. Instead, it encourages us to take a few simple steps which, if utilized regularly and in accordance with one's values, will help us to shift the momentum of our society away from the contempt some political leaders and media outlets have created.Well balanced and non-partisan, the authors have created an important resource for those of us who want to ensure the next generations of Americans and humans in general are able to communicate and collaborate effectively rather than miring political institutions in hate and contempt. This tome will serve as a resource which we can revisit frequently throughout our lives as we practice the clearly communicated methods for self-awareness which sends ripples of positive action throughout our communities and our world. It reminds us that the work of being human and living together requires openness and diligence as opposed to the rash, emotional entanglements fueled by social media and conflict entrepreneurs.The authors share specific, practical examples they experienced throughout their lives as they gave their best efforts to make this world a better place for our progeny. Keeping with this mission in mind, they have created a roadmap to help us guide ourselves and our future generations away from inflammatory, hate driven and polarizing communication methods and toward a sense of community, openness, and understanding which seem to have nearly vanished over the last hundred years.I do not recommend reading this book and returning it; I recommend buying two copies. One to read and keep for yourself as you revisit the important themes and continue to practice the skills it shares, the way an athlete must continue to train or lose their abilities. Then, pass the second copy on to someone you care about, or maybe even better, someone with whom you often disagree or engage in conflict. If we all apply these principles, we will begin to regain our sense of community and erode the intellectual obstacles our political and media institutions have fortified in the last hundred years. I thank the authors for this book and encourage all humans to open our minds to their wisdom as we seek first to understand others, especially those with whom we disagree.
