Ascent

Description:

Pain is merely weakness being purged from the soul. It is a necessary step in the evolution to Godhood.

Veins popped and burst against my skin as I

struggled to see where the voice was emanating from, to no avail. Gritting my teeth, I tasted the iron in my blood. I could feel it dripping from the corners of my eyes, scarlet tracks like tears crisscrossing my face. The cracking white halo around my neck was stained crimson by each droplet, every impact hammering away at my very soul. The gaping wound in my side seared with pain as I struggled to move, surging against the invisible bindings restraining me.

“Angel Valkyrie, you are one no longer. Become a God.” Join the Gods? After all they’ve done to me? To my people? Never.

NEVER.

A spine-chilling cry ripped from my lips as I felt the halo begin to shatter. Small, pure white pieces of my halo—containing my very being, my soul, my essence itself—drifted down before fading from existence.

Move. Move. MOVE. I NEED TO MOVE.

My last shreds of sanity coalesced into power as I forced every ounce from every blood cell still contained within my body. My blood ran gold and black as my eyes flashed the same hues, my body casting an unearthly silhouette. Taking one final look around, I gazed upon the battleground. Blood stained the multicolored earth of Aetherion as Gods pranced around, celebrating their victory. Meanwhile, my people lay dead at their feet, wings crushed, weapons broken, souls shattered. Everyone who ever meant anything to me lay dead, never to move again.

I hate them. I hate them. They deserve to suffer. Suffer the same pain I have. No, even greater! And I will deliver it to them. One day. I will return to this accursed land one day. All of Aetherion will feel my wrath. I would destroy the Gods for what they had done. Not today, not tomorrow, maybe not even in the coming years, but they would pay. Nothing would stop me. My final thread of consciousness grasped one final thought as my mangled soul threatened to give way.

They would pay. They would die.
