This was good and practical. What is its scope? These are just a few of the questions English asks and proposes good answers to.A good book for pastors, elders and lay leaders in the church.

As a lay-leader at my church, I found this book to be refreshing, convicting, challenging, and inspiring. I immediately emailed my pastors and elders and encouraged them to buy the book, read it, and talk about how our church can benefit from it. I love that JT says that discipleship requires community and learning, and too often our churches focus too heavily on one or the other (usually community). You must have BOTH! And he lays out a case for a robust learning environment that any church of any size can implement. He calls for an active learning environment (asking students to participate through homework and regurgitating what they’re learning to others), accountability (holding people to a high standard of participation), and scale/sequence (bringing people deeper and deeper, continually). The goal is fellowship with God, and as people are being discipled, they will naturally disciple others.This is NOT a book about one-on-one discipleship/mentor relationships, but I believe those relationships will naturally be born out of a culture built on deep community discipleship.My only critique is that sometimes JT will say something, then say the same thing again in a different way. His chapters could have been about 20% shorter if he hadn’t done this. However, some people really benefit from hearing a point from many perspectives. It’s not my preferred style, but the content is too good to let that stop me from reading and recommending it.

This book offers a solid paradigm for implementing a church-based discipleship program. Its emphasis on learning in the Christian life is key. It is well structured and the main points and questions at end of each chapter are very helpful. Only two beefs. First, the book is highly repetitive. It could have easily been shortened by 30% without losing any of its message. Second, most of the examples are from a mega church setting. The last chapter addresses this concern but it would have been better not to reference his own experience with the Village Church so often. Most churches are small and their leaders could be put off with so many illustrations from a megachurch. Overall, it is worth reading, although you may find yourself skimming a good bit because of the redundancy.

I just completed my fourth read-through of this book and its quickly become a personal favorite--a resource that stays on my desk. I've given this book to our elders, sent it to pastor friends, and passed it out as Christmas gifts. I think the church has dangerously limited the scope of discipleship the last twenty-five years by limiting its definition to life-on-life mentorship. This, in my opinion, has left the church hurting for deep spiritual formation and covering the gash with "easier" replacement programs. Dr. English rips the band-aid off and exposes this wound, cleans it, and supplies the Church with a fresh balm and refocused vision for pursuing the good life offered by growing in the knowledge of God. I think what I appreciate the most about Dr. English's approach in Deep Discipleship is that he doesn't attempt to reinvent the wheel or even give the reader all the answers (though I suspect he could). Even better, instead of giving you better answers, he challenges leaders to ask better questions. In learning to ask the right questions, we find a sustainable and scalable approach to discipleship in the local church. I pray this book leads to a revival of parishioners who can say "I was discipled by my church."

I’ve just finished Dr. English’s book. At age 77 I can only say that I wish I had read this 35 years ago. Dr. English’s assessment of the state of the church is spot on. We expect nothing of our congregation, and hence we achieve nothing kingdom related. This look at Deep Disciples that reproduce, builds on the shoulders of Howard Hendricks, Greg Ogden, and others who were committed to the church’s work of teaching and making mature disciples of Christ! Two thumbs up for Dr. English! Must read for every senior pastor! **Do not neglect the epilogue!

This book challenges me to raise the bar in the small women's Bible study I lead. I'm not a pastor, but so much of what he writes about can be applied to my group. If we aren't making disciples, culture will do it and you may not even realize it. We can do better! Thank you, J.T. English!

Very helpful in many ways. English argues that the problem that churches often lower the bar in terms of discipling members which is unhelpful. What is needed is discipleship that takes members deeper into the Word of God, theology, and spiritual habits.The outline of the book is essential a series of questions: Where does discipleship take place? Where does discipleship happen in the church? What do disciples need? How do disciples grow? Where do disciples go?English's sub-argument is that the church needs to recover educational spaces that lead disciples deeper into areas such as theology, Bible knowledge, and spiritual habits. All of this is based on the premise that, to use Herman Bavinck's phrase, "God, and God alone is man's highest good." The deeper we move into God, the deeper our walk with God is.The main audience of the book is American evangelicals. However, any church can benefit from deeply thinking through the questions and principles laid out by the author. Some ideas may not be possible in my continental Reformed tradition, such as training future pastors and church planters in the local church itself, but it did lead me to think about how local churches in my tradition can do a better job of discipling people towards ministry of various kinds.One critique is that English is very repetitive. Sometime whole paragraphs seem to repeat themselves. Other times he communicates the same idea a number of different ways. However, the main arguments of this book are important and ought to be seriously considered by any church leader.
Excellent book for pastors considering developing the discipleship of your church
I liked the Biblical approach...the desire to follow the discipleship patterns of Jesus. There are some very helpful principles and ideas here that are scalable to any and every church situation.
Excellent resource on discipleship
Highly recommend when thinking on anything regarding discipleship in the local church. English has many excellent things to think about and consider.
