5.0 out of 5 stars Confidently protected against viper kisses
I'm going to hate wearing these. Honestly. But if I ever need them, I'm going to hate it even more if I don't have them. I spend a lot of time hiking around the desert and into canyons and other remote, backcountry areas. I use a walking stick as a way of alerting potential rattlesnakes I'm coming in order to not surprise them while I'm walking. I watch the ground constantly for movement. But in spite of this, I am CONSTANTLY worries I'm going to step on a rattler.First thing's first: the fit is perfect. I measured my legs exactly as they show on the product page and ordered the corresponding size. The fit was as if they were designed for my legs specifically. But that doesn't make them any better to wear. The fact remains that you will be wrapping your ankles and shins in this thick fabric, over the top of your pants and socks. There are a LOT of layers there. And what's worse is that you will be doing it specifically on HOT days, because those are the days when the snakes are out. But the peace of mind walking without having to worry about viper kisses on your ankles and shins more than makes up for the temporary discomfort these might cause. Don't get me wrong: they are very well made. The discomfort has nothing to do with the materials used or the construction of the gators. It has everything to do with the very nature of what they are. And I have every bit of confidence in their ability to do what they say they will do: keep me alive when I'm deep in the back country. The only cause for concern I have about these gators is the stirrup-type strap that goes under the boot. It's a rubber strap that I worry won't survive the hikes I go on. I might see if I can reinforce it with a piece of canvas or something, but I'm not sure. It's probably fine as it is.In conclusion, the reason I believe these will absolutely work is for the most random, obscure reason: their product tag. They made their product tag out of 3 different cards: two premium, heavyweight black cards and one premium, heavyweight orange card sandwiched between them. The black card has a really nice spot UV logo on it with white print on the words. They did not have to go this hard on their tag. This is a company I was previously unacquainted with, but after seeing the level of pride they take in something as simple as their product tag, I can't help but think how much pride they must have in their actual products.I'm so excited to never have to need these, but I'm so excited to be able to use.
4.0 out of 5 stars Some unexpected benefits
I didn't get these looking for protection from snakes, although they feel sturdy enough to keep me safe from being bitten.I got them for cutting firewood. Specifically, I got them to prevent my boots from being filled with the wood chips from my chainsaw, which then stick to the linings, and to my socks. Once they're embedded, it's practically impossible to get them back out. Before getting these, I was buying cheap socks at the local discount mart to use as disposables. No more! For this, they're great. This functionality also keeps ticks from getting into my pant legs from the bottom. I hadn't thought about that, but it's a nice side benefit. The sturdiness has protected my shins against more than a few strikes from limbs smacking into them. Another unexpected benefit. One the strap is adjusted, they're easy to get on and off. However, a while back I started wearing 'barefoot' shoes and boots, with minimalist soles -- very flat, very thin, very flexible. It's really helped clear up some problems that I was having with my feet. As I put these gaiters on for the first time, I realized that the strap that holds the gaiter down would normally go through the tunnel created by the rise of the boot heel. But my boots don't have heels, so it rubs against the ground as I walk. I'll be interested to see how well it holds up to this over time. Also, it introduces a slight risk of tripping if it catches on something. The strap is the weakest part of this design, I think. I'd rather just have some sort of elastic to pull the sides of the gaiter towards the sides of the boot. That would make it easier to work with different boots, without having to re-adjust the straps. If these straps wear out from friction, I'll probably replace them with this kind of strap. I have a feeling every part of the gaiters *but* the straps will probably last forever. These gaiters are a little different than others in that you have to size them by measuring your calves. They are not one-size-fits-all. I can see where that's a strength if you're always going to use them with the same pair of boots. But it's a weakness if you change boots with any frequency. I recommend that you buy the next size up. Being too big isn't really a problem, but being too small can be.
