5.0 out of 5 stars Wide variety of projects from an affordable kit

(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } This is a mechanical engineering play set with a surprising number of models to build for the price. It includes 142 pieces - a variety of gears, building studs and other mechanical parts - plus instructions to build 22 different "experiments", ranging from a balance scale to a sun-and-moon orrery. The kit is advertised for ages 8-14, and I think it's certainly suitable for that range, especially the younger half of it. The pieces are much larger than Lego Technic, making it easier to see _how_ the machines work rather than just assembling a model. Provided components include gears, twine, a spring, elastic, support blocks, connectors - a whole variety of stuff. The accompanying experiment manual is excellent, explaining some of the physics and concepts behind the experiments in addition to providing construction diagrams. I really like the added context and think the kit is significantly strengthened by the quality of the manual.Nice toy for self-directed future engineers to learn about a variety of mechanical concepts!

My 11 year old enjoyed this kit but found part of it frustrating. When using the crane part there was a part that didn't quite fit like it should have in the instructions. But we worked around it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice imagination builder

    S.W. · May 16, 2025

My nephew loved this set. After unboxing, I worked with my nephew to build the crane. The directions were easy to read and mostly accurate, there were some parts that were better than others given that the crane operates on an equilibrium, but I think that may be part of the pleasure, making adjustments to make the item being built your own. In short, it provided a great set of tools for exploring youthful imagination and learning the physics of building something and being successful.

3.0 out of 5 stars It is fine, but not worth the price

    D. · April 3, 2025

I got this at $28 and at that price, it was barely justifiable. My son is 12, and he works a lot with Lego Technic a lot, including the Spike Prime and mindstorm. He got this and built the trebuchet, and then set about fixing the design mistakes on the design. The product is similar to Technic, albeit bigger in size. a similar technic set would be around $30 range so when I got this for 28, I could barely justify getting a non-compatible product to the existing line that we have with thousands of pieces but at the current price, I would find it really difficult to recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning Science....through Play! Great projects to work together with your kids to learn science.

    S.R. · March 30, 2025

Are you looking for educational toys? Stimulating toys that teach something, not numb your kids minds? Here it is.I opened this with my grandson and we had a blast.Opening the box revealed a lot of building pieces and a thick manual that provided 22 different "experiments" that you can build and explore with. Once built, they manual provided information on the physics principles in "play".I let my grandson pick from the projects and we built a few and did the "experiments" with them during our initial exposure to the set. We then discussed the topics (as part of the "play"). The experiments are easy to build for kids (especially if they have built plastic snap-together type blocks before - see below) and then we did the the illustrations and read about it.There are plenty of experiments (22) and you can build several of the smaller ones without having to take them apart, but the larger experiments probably will need more parts and likely only one can be done at a time. They come apart easily for your next experiment. The plastic parts are well constructed and easy to assemble. The instructions are pretty clear and easy to follow. The explanations are well done and geared to kids.Overall, this is a GREAT toy that will have kids learning through play. You will have fun with it too (and will likely learns some new concepts too.)Highly recommended.Note: Although these assemble similar to the common snap-together blocks, I do NOT think that they are interchangeable and you should not expect them to work together. But that's ok! These are great self-contained learning projects.

4.0 out of 5 stars My kids like it!

    B.M. · May 19, 2025

My children like this engineering toy set. It's very similar to legos so the kids pick up the concept of using it easily. It does take a parent to work alongside the child to get them started and explain some of the concepts. The sets are not hard to assemble. It is a bit expensive for an educational toy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much more kid-safe than the sets we had when I was a kid.

    F. · March 26, 2025

I got this for my grandson to play with in hopes he would learn about building things. He's six, so a little under the suggested age range. He does a decent job of playing with it, and building things from his imagination, but I've been unsuccessful in getting him to complete any of the catalog of items included in the box. But isn't that the goal? Get them to use their imagination?I had an erector set when I was his age, and I have to admit, I was probably the same way. I still had fun with it, and he is also. The parts are well made, and much more kid-safe than the sets we had when I was his age!
