I call it matchas hot older brother. smells nutty and chocolatey as soon as you open it, and the TASTE!! I like to make blueberry hojicha lattes, and with this stuff, I drink them often! not gritty, very nutty and deep flavored. amazing value, I don’t feel nervous using too much for a drink because this is 100g for like $25! so affordable. rich brown color as well. I say, if you are new to hojicha and matcha, start out with this! (and trader joes single matcha stick packs, super good)
5.0 out of 5 stars The correct way to make a Hojicha Latte with this delicious powder!
If this hojicha tastes fishy or burned, then it's probably user error. After experimenting here's what I recommend for a good iced hojicha latte with this powder:- 1 generous tsp of hojicha powder- 2 oz hot water - 175 degrees F- sweetener of choice (my favorite is a splash of maple syrup, but vanilla is delicious too)- ice- milk of choiceAdd the water to the powder and froth (you can use a traditional matcha whisk, but I'm lazy and use a cheap electric handheld frother wand). Pour over the milk and ice and enjoy. Simple and delicious! The key is not to burn the powder - 175 F is good! It's not rocket science - adjust it from there as desired. Add a little more water, add some flavor to it, top with a homemade cold foam....just enjoy it!
5.0 out of 5 stars Beginner hojicha taste test
For my first time trying it I really liked it. When making it it has a very roasted smell to it but once you add maple syrup and whatever choice of dairy it tastes very a bit of roasted nuttiness to it. I've also tried it with honey and it kinda tasted like a classic milk tea boba. I would say its definitely a good choice for my first time trying hojicha.
3.0 out of 5 stars Taste was not enjoyable.
I wanted to like this so bad, but mine taste like burnt ganja. 😫
5.0 out of 5 stars Yummy!
I was skeptical because some reviews said it was over-roasted or that there was a weird aftertaste or some fishy odor. I'm happy to say that I did not experience any of that! The flavors are very mellow, kind of nutty, with a slight roasted flavor. If you're a fan of stronger flavors, this might not be for you since it's on the lighter side. Perfect for beginners who are trying out matcha/hojicha though! It comes in a pretty big canister too, so this will last you a while!
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic
I have tried many hojicha powders here and in Japan and this is great. It is just as good as Rishi Tea’s version.I highly recommend putting the powder through a sift before using it.For temperature, 175F and 170F have give the best results (as long as I mix it in a pre warmed bowl/cup)
1.0 out of 5 stars Disgusting 🫣
There is nothing good about this.A frequently drink this company's regular Matcha and I love it. I was excited to try something new by them.It smells like rotten rancid nuts.I thought maybe it tastes better then it smells... sadly no.I mixed it with cacao powder. I still couldn't get it down. I wonder if Bolo stored it wrong and it went bad? It's dated for 11.30.25.Called Bolo and got my money back.I will keep getting Midori Spring Emerald Matcha though as it is the best value!
5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious, Smooth & Organically Sourced – Plus Tested for Heavy Metals!
I love this hojicha! My lattes taste just as good—if not better—than the ones from cafes. It’s rich, nutty, and creamy, and it blends super smoothly. Plus, as someone who’s pregnant, I really appreciate that it’s organically sourced and tested for heavy metals.
Smooth and Flavorful Hojicha – Perfect for a Relaxing, Low-Caffeine Tea Experience
(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } The roasted flavours of this hojicha powder is incredibly smooth and well-balanced, offering a toasty, nutty taste that’s perfect for a calm, relaxing tea break. It’s less grassy compared to traditional green tea, which I personally prefer, and the flavours is deep without being overpowering. One of the things I appreciate the most is the low caffeine content, making it an ideal choice for evening sipping without the worry of staying awake. It has quickly become my go-to drink when I want something warm but not too stimulating. The powder dissolves easily, and I love that you can enjoy it both hot or cold, depending on your mood. The fact that it’s USDA certified organic, non-GMO, and vegan also gives me peace of mind about the quality and sourcing of the product. You can tell it’s crafted with care.Whether you’re already a fan of hojicha or new to it, this product is a must-try for anyone looking for a soothing, delicious tea with a rich roasted flavour. Highly recommended!
Creamy, roasted tea!
This product took me by surprise. This taste like matcha but has that extra roasted taste to it. It also has an aftertaste like caramel/chocolate. I mix mine with a pump of vanilla syrup and I have also tried it with a small teaspoon of brown sugar. If you love matcha, you will love this too. I like that it's more affordable than matcha.
best beginner hojicha
It tastes so good!!! I was afraid of tasting or smelling something fishy as some people commented but it a pwrfect beginner hojicha. Nutty and roasted, not that bold but not that bland, a perfect balance. it reminds me a bit of dark chocolate. I also heard that theres a bit of a caramel aftertaste but i think because of the milk I used (fresh milk) I couldnt taste it. The colour of the hojicha is dark a good sign of a good hojicha. I dont usually write reviews but this is so good :)))
I dropped the tin……
…. I was really pleased to be offered this powder to try. I love trying different and healthy drinks and foods.Unfortunately though I am unable to review it properly. This is because as I went to make some, I’d taken the lid off of the jar that I had decanted the powder into, only to drop the blinking jar……powder - and smashed glass - everywhere on the floor!!.I can tell you the air was proper blue…..for quite a while 🤣The tin is good quality though, the powder looks good…..it’s just that I did not get to taste it!I would order it again though and happy to recommend based on what I did experience with it……..
rich, toasty, and slightly vegetal, with a naturally sweet, earthy taste and a touch of bitterness
The powder comes in a sealed bag, tucked inside a tin with a snug-fitting lid. Its colour is a deep, rich amber, much like burnt caramel. The texture is fine and smooth, without any lumps, and it gives off a nutty, slightly smoky aroma with hints of caramel and roasted chestnuts. There is no mustiness or stale smell—just an inviting scent. When tasted in its powdered form, the tea has a gentle sweetness paired with roasted, earthy flavours and a mild bitterness. It is smooth and lacks the astringency I usually taste in non-roasted green tea powders. Although I haven’t tried toasted green tea before, I can compare it to non-roasted green tea powders like matcha.Brewed, the tea turns a reddish-brown with slight cloudiness and sediment. The aroma is rich, reminiscent of toasted nuts.In terms of flavour, it is mild, smooth, and rounded, with a naturally sweet, roasted taste that lingers pleasantly. Unlike non-roasted green tea, which can be grassy and quite bitter, this tea offers a distinct roasted, slightly vegetal flavour and only a touch of bitterness. The mouthfeel is smooth and silky, with no grit or harsh aftertaste. What I particularly enjoyed is how balanced the taste is—neither harsh nor overly bitter or smoky. It has a warm, comforting quality that regular green tea lacks.Another plus is that it has lower caffeine than unroasted green tea, making it perfect for an evening cup. It also feels gentler on the stomach compared to the sometimes harsh, astringent green teas that can cause me acid reflux and irritation. All in all, I found the roasted green tea enjoyable and would recommend it to anyone who prefers milder flavours.
