A daughter tells her mom's story of a woman in 1950s rural Wisconsin raising a family alone and struggling to secure a future for her children without losing herself. At age 50, with her children grown, Betty breaks the confines of the Midwest by securing a nursing position in Saudi Arabia, finding adventure and romance. After traveling the world, Betty moves back to the U.S. to be near her family. Her happy, active retirement is interrupted by her son’s AIDS death and her own terminal cancer diagnosis. It’s the story of a daughter’s overwhelming grief and how she found healing through writing. It is the inspirational story of an unconventional love that binds an unconventional family together and expresses itself in forgiveness, grief, shared revelation, and surprising joy.

Review

"...With a novelist's eye for detail, Mary McSwain Steele evokes the sense of place of southwestern Wisconsin as few writers ever have, her description rivaling David Rhodes' bestselling novel, Driftless. The author threads her narrative through not just memories of her mother, but the journey Steele embarked upon to learn more about her father and his first family, including a half-brother she never met. Especially poignant is how, after not seeing her father since she was too young to remember his face, she finally found his forgotten grave in a Florida cemetery. Steele's story of how she and her sister, Susan, helped their mother fight her losing battle with cancer is a gripping testament of how two loving, caring daughters returned the love of their mother." ~ Des Moines Register

Betty: A Memoir is an extraordinary life story that is a riveting read from first page to last. Exceptionally well written, organized and presented, 'Betty: A Memoir' is a compelling and unreservedly recommended addition to community, college, and university library Contemporary American Biography collections. All main characters are unique and fully fleshed out with compelling, layered motivations and traits. Secondary characters are unique and have a meaningful purpose. The cover art is nicely done with readable font and a well-represented picture. The photographs added a nice personal touch to this memoir. This was a well-told memoir which should provide valuable information for others."

From the Author

When her doctor told my mom she had endometrial cancer and there was no treatment, she asked only that we keep her comfortable. At the time of her diagnosis, we didn't know she had just 32 days left with us. After a two-week stay in the hospital, my sister, Susan, and I cared for Mom so that she could die in her own home. During those long days, we laughed and cried, reminisced about the past and talked about the future, wrote her obituary together, and grew closer than the three of us had ever been.

After Mom died, my grief was far greater and lasted much longer than I could have ever imagined. I began to feel anxiety to a degree I had not experienced before. As a former journalist, I had always enjoyed writing and had found it helpful to put my thoughts on paper. And, so, I began writing letters to Mom.

I never planned for anyone to read those letters. Writing was strictly therapy for me. In addition to the letters, Susan and I exchanged emails nearly every day for several months. Later, I started writing memories of our growing up years. I wrote down my thoughts about the ways in which being raised without a father had affected me as a child and also as an adult. I re-read all the letters Mom had sent while working as a nurse in Saudi Arabia and traveling to 29 countries on five continents over nine years. The letters to and from Mom, the emails with my sister, notes from caring friends who provided so much comfort, and writing about all the incredible events that happened after - and because of - Mom's death evolved into this book.

I didn't intend for
Betty: A Memoir to be a self-help guide for people who are providing end-of-life care or facing the death of a loved one. But many readers have told me that Mom's story helped them through some rough patches at various stages of their grief journey. I am happy about that and I know my mom would be, too.

Betty is not only about death and dying, however. It's about hope, grace, and redemption. It's about family, relationships, and resiliency. It's about the need to know where we came from and what went into making us who we are today.

Most importantly, it's a tribute to my mother, an imperfect but remarkable woman who raised three children by herself on a nurse's salary, travelled the world, and then contentedly settled into the role of mother and grandmother.
