If you are trying to protect a specific thing, such as a trashcan or entryway, use a perimeter application by creating a 1-3-inch-wide band around area/thing to be protected. The more things you can do to prevent rodents, the better. The idea is to make your home as unappealing as possible to rodents, giving them no reasons to invade. Thoroughly inspect and seal up any holes, cracks, crevices, or openings that mice may enter through.
