The gauge is well built and more stout than I thought it would be with a very strong and sturdy stem. It has a large dial and large numbers for easy reading (very important in my book), has a large temperature range, stainless steel, pretty responsive and was accurate and needed no calibration (see image). It doesn't bend or flex when pushing into the ground.I use the gauge for soil testing to ensure optimum conditions for seeding lawns and other lawn care uses and I use it to test soil temperatures to ensure my irrigation system is safe from freezing during those late fall season frosts.Note: The description states that the stem is 6", however, the measuring area of the stem is only 5". A none issue for me.I highly recommend this unit for its build, large temperature range, accuracy and readability.
5.0 out of 5 stars Works Great
I have used this a few years now and it is still working great. I leave it outside year round (even in snow) and have had no issues with it. This has been a great quality buy.
5.0 out of 5 stars Rugged and accurate
I started using these as a Biology teacher for various labs with teenagers who tend to brutalize things! These are the best! Retired now but I have about 15 of these I use at home. I use them all over - in greenhouse, indoor seed starting, outdoors in various gardens. I really don't take very good care of them. Some are forgotten outside buried in vegetation all winter. Some are left unattended in greenhouse all summer in scorching temps. A couple I have lost for years and found buried in compost pile. ALL of them have made it through - still reading accurately and looking great when I clean them up. Some are over 10 years old.Highly recommend!!
4.0 out of 5 stars large, sturdy, easy to read
large and sturdy; easy to read dial. Have not calibrated myself but seems accurate to ambient temp
5.0 out of 5 stars It's Exactly What Any Gardener Needs!
I use this thermometer to measure the temperature of my garden in the spring during planting season. It is terrific. It measures the same temperature as my Oregon Scientific climate system so I know that it's highly accurate. Easy to read from a standing position and a great price as well.
5.0 out of 5 stars A BEAST of a thermometer if there ever was one.
Excellent thermometer. Tested its accuracy and it's DNOBA! That's "Dead Nuts One Balls Accurate" for those of you who don't know. Very very well made. Exceeded my expectations. Will work great for my use in monitoring ground temperature during winter to determine crawlspace encapsulation modifications that I am considering making.
5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy duty thermometer well suited for taking soil temperatures.
I am splitting hairs but in interest of accuracy I'd characterize this as a general purpose thermometer that is well suited for soil temperature measurement rather than a soil thermometer. If you want to view a "soil temperature thermometer" take a look at the one offered for same price by Territorial Seed Company- one of my favorite seed catalogs. That said, this is an impressive thermometer. Very solidly built at a good price. I compared with typical kitchen meat thermometers of same design and this is far sturdier. There should be no problem using in all but the most dry/hardened soils.I checked the calibration against a high quality at kitchen electronic thermometer at 48F, 65F, 100F. Temperature was one degree different at 48F and exactly the same at the other temperatures. There is what appears to be a calibration adjustment screw on the back of the dial. There is also a 3/4" pipe fitting on the back for screwing thermometer into a fitting. Probe is sturdy which means it has a lot of mass and takes a couple minutes to take an accurate reading- be aware but it is not an issue.
5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding quality - highly recommend!
I hunted far and wide for a durable outdoor thermometer with this temperature range. Do you know how hard it is to find one that goes from -40F - 160F? I went through many before I started googling 'scientific' and 'industrial'. This one is for agricultural uses. I wanted it for the back of my truck, under the camper shell, to be good in frigid weather as well as the tropics, instead of bottoming out and losing its way when it got above 80F, LOL. I love road trips and camping up here in the northwest, and having an accurate outdoor temperature is essential. The digital ones couldn't hack the high temps, nor the batteries handle the cold. This product is very high quality stainless steel with a glass face, easy to read and meant to be left outdoors in soil in all weather. I highly recommend it. If you want a cheaper, much smaller option with a magnifying plastic dome face, in the same temperature range, check out the Supco HVAC thermometers, under 'air conditioning'. I purchased two of them awhile back, here on Bolo, for $3.79 apiece. Doesn't hurt to have this super durable high quality one, plus a few backups. Hope this helps!

A rare, virtually perfect product
Product: Vee Gee Scientific 82160-6 Dial Soil Thermometer, 6" Stainless Steel Stem, 3" Dial Display, -40 to 160-Degree FPrice: $21.84I bought the Vee Gee Thermometer to measure soil temperatures for the purpose of improving my lawn care. This product has been a pleasant surprise in terms of its robustness, accuracy and general utility. In the mornings, it does tend to accumulate some dew on the top. I might treat it with "Rain-X" to mitigate the effect.Accuray:- I compared the VeeGee thermometer to my fancy factory-calibrated ThermaPen and the VeeGee was within 0.5 F of the ThermaPen. My VeeGee thermometer is quite accurate!Pros:- Good accuracy- Very robust, strong industrial build- Generally does its job very well.Cons:- Does not have degrees Celsius
Five Stars
Has industrial grade feel to it. Compared it to other temperature gauges in house and appears to be accurate.
Parfait !

Simple
This is well made and appears to very very accurate with soiltemperature. I stick it in and wait about 15 minutes toget a proper reading. It should last me forever
