5.0 out of 5 stars A great DVD tackling science for young children

D.A.J. · December 26, 2009

This DVD covers the Sid episodes of brushing teeth, eating a healthy diet, germs, and exercise. There are also bonus episodes - including one on vaccinations that we haven't watched yet. Sid is great a teaching science because the program conquers it effortlessly. It doesn't seem preachy or condescending to children. Unlike many learning programs, Sid is not a "remake" of an old show that is trying to be hip today (as in the case of the Electric Company or Sesame Street), Sid was created for children today so it doesn't feel forced.I enjoy that Sid learns not only at school, but at home as well. He learns from his mother and father as well as his wonderful grandmother. The program also does a good job of showing experiments that can be done at home, which we have done with our children. Sid seems to be a normal kid (although one gifted in asking good questions) and does well at fostering a scientific investigation mindset in young children. Our children are currently 2 and 4 years old and they have learned a lot watching the episodes. This learning as led to more in-depth study on many of the subjects introduced on the show. While you can watch these for free by finding them on your local PBS station, having the DVD means you can watch them at your leisure. We also took them on vacation with us and could watch a quality show that was appropriate for our children.I have recommended this and other Sid videos to others as well.If you want an entertaining show that teaches without preaching and makes learning enjoyable for young children - definitely try this out. There are entertaining songs that are quick enough to be engaging, but not dominating. Scientific experiments that can be done at home with mom and dad. They acknowledge the teaching role of mom's and dad's (as many programs seem to infer learning happens only at school), and thankfully shows an intact, functioning, multi-generational family (another aspect sorely missing from many shows today). The show is fun for kids and you as a parent won't go crazy. On a recent 9 hour car ride, my children watched the main 4 episodes several times in a row and at no point did my husband or I try to jump out the car screaming "make it stop, make it stop" - that alone makes this a good DVD to purchase! If you need more encouragement, here are the lyrics to a song that appears in every episode:"I love my mom,my mom is cool;but now its time, for having fun at school".Have fun and get ready for your little one to burst through the door saying "one scientist in the house!"Most appropriate for the 2 - 6 age range.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this show, and so do my kids!

H.V.R. · January 3, 2010

I love this show, and so do my kids, who are 2 and 3 years old. It's a great science teaching tool for kids under ~5. We have repeated some of Sid's experiments at home. My kids love the information and the songs. The format of the show has just enough structure, with transition songs and the right amount of new information for them to learn. The transition songs are catchy, as are Teacher Susie's clever songs, which are different each show. The "I love my mom" song that another reviewer quoted is the BEST SONG EVER.Additionally, the characters are all respectful to each other. The kids are respectful of parents, teachers and each other. The adults are respectful of the kids, too, treating them as smart people with important ideas. It's relatively unusual to see a kid in a kid's show interacting with his parents at all. I love that Sid has two parents, who are both supportive, and especially that the dad is not a stereotypical dolt like so many dads on TV. He is sometimes a little goofy for comic relief, but the mom also has a few goofy moments, so it really doesn't come off that the dad is a dolt while everyone else is brilliant. The show makes a point of stating how cool his mom and grandma are, and Sid frequently says how cool his dad is.The only disappointment: although they include the 4 main shows (which run Monday through Thursday on our PBS station), the summary show, which appears on Fridays, is not on the DVD. I was not surprised, since I had previously purchased the Bug Club and Change Happens DVDs, but it's one of those wouldn't-it-be-nice features. They did include the vaccination episode as a bonus, so there are 5 Sid shows on this disc.

If you have a young child, then Sid the Science Kid is just right for you. So far any DVD I have purchased has been quality viewing and well worth the money. Sid proves that many science concepts are accessible to young kids when presented in the right way. Science is all around these little guys, and they want to know. This DVD contains episodes that help kids understand what to do to keep healthy. My child loves to watch Sid. I especially love it when he watches this DVD because it reminds him of what kinds of foods to eat, about brushing his teeth ... He doesn't have to hear it from me!

5.0 out of 5 stars educationally fun

E.K. · February 5, 2010

My daughter (2) has been rather in love with Sid and all of his pals since we have started watching the show. This particular grouping of episodes is about taking care of your body. In the standard Sid the Science Kid format, these episodes are entertaining while being especially educational. This has been a good tool for helping her to remember to cover her mouth when she sneezes and why we can't only eat cake, etc. It appears these messages have been much better received from Sid than her parents.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful DVD!

A.C. · October 13, 2015

Our health department bought this DVD to use in our waiting room during flu clinic and it has proven to be a helpful tool to educate and lessen fears that go along with getting shots. All the episodes on this DVD are about cleanliness and overall good health, so we plan on using it regularly during our childhood clinics.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing

N. · December 6, 2013

My grandson had no interest in these Sid episodes. The long intro is repeated in every episode, so it seems you are seeing the same one again and again. I expected some science, considering it has Science in the title. Mostly it is the character Sid interviewing his classmates about what they think about a subject. Disappointing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great DVD & Wonderful Service

DVD arrived on time and very well packages.DVD plays great, no skipping or issues there. And my 20 month old son loves to watch this DVD at least twice a week before nap time. I would highly rec this for anyone with a toddler-- any older and they may not be interested because it can be a bit repetitive.

totally engaging
