Mill Creek Entertainment really did a very good job putting this collection together. You get to see stars like Mamie Smith, Lena Horne, Ethel Andrews, Nat King Cole, Butterfly McQueen (you will recognize her voice), Dinah Washington, Martha Davis, Ruth Brown, Nipsey Russell, Faye Adams, Sarah Vaughn, Dinah Shore, and many more early African-American performers. This is not a collection of musicals produced, directed and full of white actors. Willie Bryant, an early African-American MC, has two movies full of segments of his variety show. Most people remember Michael Jackson's Moon Walk Dance. The truth is that those steps were part of Bill Bailey's, an excellent tap dancer's, routine 30 years prior to Jackson's time.The collection is awesome. However, my 12-disc collection was difficult to get running in my DVD player. As of yet, I have not seen Side A of Disc 6. This is a manufacturing issue. I really am not interested in those two movies. So, I am not returning the collection.

Mill Creek's sets make this possible. Because they're inexpensive. Some have poor visual and audio but others come through okay. I bought this whole set for one movie: "Delightfully Dangerous" - Jane Powell was about 16. She sang like a song bird. It was packaged oddly when I received it, making it impossible not to touch the other discs. So I took them out of their cardboard holders and put them in 'CD album index pages', that come in 5 packs for .99 at Walmart. They are like envelopes with soft black material on one side and vinyl on the other side. I cut off the side 'write-on' strip, so they just fit in the 'Musicals' box. But this Mill Creek Collection is great! Adolphe Menjou in "Road Show" is wonderful! I'd never seen him like this! I never knew what a versatile actor he was! And in "Mr. Imperium," Ezio Pinza was famous on stage (He did "South Pacific" with Mary Martin on stage), not as well known on screen. This collection is a delightful opportunity to see and appreciate these old films and actors from the past.

I just received this set a few days ago and have spot checked all the discs in it. All films play, most are reasonably decent quality; a few of the older ones, especially the Soundies sets, are poor prints, but the material is very rare and hearing those bands and singers perform is a real treat. I am looking forward to watching some of the all-black musicals as well. I have read about these movies but never seen them. Again, I think they are very rare on disc. I bought this set because, for years, I have been looking for a decent print of Anna Neagle/Ray Bolger in Sunny. It's a long way from perfect but this is, by far, the best print of this rare movie I have seen. This is a nice way to get a large number of films, most of them not the kind to turn up even on Turner Classic Movies, at a low, low price. I paid $11.95 for my set, bringing my cost to about 40 cents per film. Hard to beat that!
