Wheels: The Big Fun Book of Vehicles

Description:

About this item:

No one knows who exactly invented the wheel, but in the inventive hands of illustrator Tom Schamp young readers will have great fun learning about all the ways wheels have rolled through history.

From prehistoric carts to cars of tomorrow, this big, fun book takes a historic journey through a world where everything has wheels, from the Trojan horse to the Harley Davidson; from the stagecoach and the steam train to the Vespa and the Ferrari; from skateboards to electric scooters.

Every spread of this deliriously entertaining and educational book is filled with Tom Schamp’s quirky and colorful art. His sly, subtle texts will make older readers smile. Younger readers will return again and again to these playfully crowded pages to discover what different countries’ emergency vehicles look like; to learn about buses of every imaginable dimension and weight; and to choose which bike they’d use to win a race.

Each viewing will reveal charming new details that are as absurdly funny as they are educationally rewarding.

I love this artist. He creates so many beautiful images, full of creativity and color! You can look in his books daily and still find something new to see. I love reading this with my son who's completely into cars and trucks. We have so much fun

I can see my 1 year old enjoying it from now on to many years ahead.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sexually Explicit Illustrations May Make This Book Unsuitable For Your Child

Note: I would add pictures of the illustrations I'm writing about, but I'm concerned this review or my account would be flagged for inappropriate content. We purchased this book for our son who *loves* anything on wheels (especially cars) and this book, marketed to 4-8 year olds seemed the perfect fit. So you would imagine our surprise when he approached us with a picture that he found "weird." It's an illustration of a knight with a cross cut out of his armor, displaying his nipples and navel. Below this cross cutout is the knight's illustrated genitalia, pubic hair and all. It's clear the author attempts to be cheeky with his illustrations, often toeing the line of what is inappropriate in an attempt to keep adults as entertained as the children. And perhaps where one draws this proverbial line is different in the United States than it is in Europe (where the author/illustrator is from). But we would rather this book focus on wheels than having content that is questionable, at least, and offensive, at worst. All to say - we're asking for a refund and steering clear of Tom Schamp and anything else Prestel publishes from here on out.

Exceptional book about “wheels”

My vehicle obsessed son got this for his 3rd birthday and it’s now one of his favourite books. Outstanding illustrations and fun facts throughout, full of little jokes and Easter eggs to make it enjoyable for adults too. We have fun looking for the caterpillars, racing mice and birds hiding on every page.

Imaginative, informative and fun!

Given as a gift to a child whose father told me he liked things with wheels. This has a LOT of wheels, covering the history of wheeled objects in surprising depth, largely through the medium of illustration, with each page stuffed with intriguing details, such that it will take a long time for readers to discover all of its contents! Very with pleased with the reaction of father and son, so can highly recommend for any young, wheel-obsessed kids!
