My Body Beeps!: Growing Up With Diabetes

Description:

My Body Beeps is a joyful and empowering picture book that opens the door for children to talk about balancing their medical needs with fun, everyday life. Written by award-winning author and disability advocate Katherine Lockwood, this book helps young readers explore the sounds and sensations of their medical devices—like insulin pumps and glucose monitors—while learning how to manage their health with confidence and ease. The story follows Katie, a girl with diabetes, as she navigates the daily balance between taking care of her body and enjoying the things she loves, like playing and having fun with friends.

Katie’s Journey: In the story, Katie—who has diabetes—forms a close friendship with Olivia, a peer with asthma. Together, they discover that although they each have their own medical needs, they can still have fun, play, and be active. Their shared experiences help them connect, supporting one another through the challenges of managing health while making room for fun and adventure. This friendship underscores the idea that it’s okay to have medical needs and still live a full, joyful life.

Perfect for Children Ages 3-8, this book offers a thoughtful approach to discussing chronic conditions with children. It reassures kids that taking care of their health doesn’t mean they have to miss out on the things they enjoy, and it encourages kids to be proud of who they are—beeps, buzzes, and all.

Key Features:

  • Balancing Health and Fun: The book focuses on how children with medical needs can take care of their health while still enjoying the activities they love. It’s about finding the balance between self-care and living life to the fullest.
  • Understanding Medical Devices: Through Katie’s story, children learn that medical devices—like insulin pumps, glucose monitors, and other tools—are simply a part of taking care of their bodies. The book introduces these devices in a way that makes them feel less intimidating, while also celebrating their role in helping children feel their best.
  • Engaging Illustrations: Full of colorful and relatable images, My Body Beeps helps children visualize how they can live an active, fun life while managing their health and using their medical devices.
  • Friendship and Peer Connection: Katie’s friendship with Olivia, who has asthma, shows children how they can connect with others who may have different health needs but share the same goal of having fun and being active.
  • Positive Representation of Chronic Conditions: This book highlights the importance of embracing one’s health needs without letting them take away from enjoying life, building self-confidence and pride.
  • Ideal for Family Conversations: My Body Beeps is perfect for starting conversations between parents, caregivers, and children about living with chronic conditions, showing kids how to manage their health with positivity.

Review

A little girl with diabetes just wants to play in Lockwood's picture book.
Katie has wavy light brown hair and fair skin. Before Katie can play hide-and-seek with the other kids in the park, her mom says: "Put the receiver in your pocket, and if you beep, get your diabetes supplies from my bag." While her mom waits on a park bench nearby, Katie joins her friends, but when she goes to hide, her receiver beeps. Rather than following mom's instructions, Katie keeps playing—and beeping. Katie's friend Olivia carries a puppy dog backpack, and when they hide together, Olivia retrieves her asthma inhaler from the bag and takes a puff. Katie is inspired by her friend's independence, and when her mom finds her, Katie apologizes for worrying her and asks if she might have her own backpack to keep her diabetes supplies on hand. Sall's watercolor and pencil cartoon illustrations show Katie hiding and beeping while the other kids search; the images fortify the theme of Katie concealing her diabetes until she finds a friend with whom she can relate. Delightfully, it's Katie and Olivia's laughter about their respective conditions that gets them caught in the end (not the beeping). The prose uses short, simple sentences in the form of dialogue, Katie's inner thoughts, and third person narration set around the illustrations. The effect is a truly immersive read that kids with and without chronic medical conditions can enjoy.
Empathetic, informative, and fun.

"Katie is the perfect hero to educate children about this challenging condition. Set within a dynamic and engaging scene, Katie and her friend Olivia bond over their shared experiences. Every parent worries about their children, and a diabetes diagnosis only adds to that anxiety. But as Katie develops the confidence to speak up about her condition, her mom can rest a little easier knowing Katie is slowly becoming more independent and responsible for her health. Similarly, young readers will see that caring for their diabetes is not an obstacle that prevents them from enjoying fun activities. Rather, it's simply a part of them, and this empowering story allows these kids to feel included and in good company. . If there's anyone in your life struggling with their circumstances, medical or otherwise, My Body Beeps! is a wonderful picture book that offers the support and acceptance they need and deserve."
Indies Today 5 Star Review

My Body Beeps! is a picture book by Katherine Lockwood that teaches children about both diabetes monitors and asthma inhalers. By extension, the story teaches children what it's like to have classmates and playmates who make unusual noises or have other health conditions. Just as Olivia helps Katie, all children can learn how to help each other. Olivia had her asthma equipment in her backpack. That gives Katie an idea of how she can carry her snacks with her and take care of herself without going to her mom's bag every time she beeps. Katie's mom buys her a backpack so she can keep her snacks with her. The book also demonstrates becoming more independent, so children can handle more responsibilities. The colorful, cheery illustrations by Olga Sall help keep children's attention while they learn. I recommend this book as a helpful introduction to managing diabetes and other health problems.
