It starts with lucid descriptions of the parts involved (resistors, capacitors, inductors, tubes, and transistors) and then begins joining them together to form circuits that do useful things. Here you can see how parts such as capacitors or resistors are made and what the various types have to offer. You are introduced to the interior of a tube and get a good hand-waving explanation of how a transistor works. From there JHL starts explaining circuits, with clear examples and easily solved equations. There is excellent coverage of amplifiers, oscillators, power supplies, filters, and feedback. Amplifiers, in particular, are described from an evolutionary viewpoint, starting with early tube circuits and giving good examples of classic designs over the years. Along with other modern efforts, the author treats us to two of his own amplifier designs, widely regarded as classics and popular with the DIY audio crowd.
