Forgotten Masters: Indian Painting for the East India Company

Description:

About this item:

As the East India Company extended its sway across India in the late eighteenth century, many remarkable artworks were commissioned by Company officials from Indian painters who had previously worked for the Mughals. Published to coincide with the first UK exhibition of these masterworks at The Wallace Collection, this book celebrates the work of a series of extraordinary Indian artists, each with their own style and tastes and agency, all of whom worked for British patrons between the 1770s and the bloody end of the Mughal rule in 1857.

Edited by writer and historian William Dalrymple, these hybrid paintings explore both the beauty of the Indian natural world and the social realities of the time in one hundred masterpieces, often of astonishing brilliance and originality. They shed light on a forgotten moment in Anglo-Indian history during which Indian artists responded to European influences while keeping intact their own artistic visions and styles. These artists represent the last phase of Indian artistic genius before the onset of the twin assaults - photography and the influence of western colonial art schools - ended an unbroken tradition of painting going back two thousand years. As these masterworks show, the greatest of these painters deserve to be remembered as among the most remarkable Indian artists of all time.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“The book accompanying the exhibition is far more than just a catalogue….this [is] the best and most handsome book on the subject currently available.” ―Peter Parker, Literary Review

“He does a sensitive, subtle job of reframing the argument by focusing attention back on the artists, who fashioned a captivating hybrid style that drew on European and Mughal models.” ―Alastair Sooke,
The Daily Telegraph

Awesome book and a great conversation starter. Finished reading it in a day. Only one bug-a-boo is that it arrived lose in a large box without protective plastic covering/wrap. I had ordered it new, but the cover had what appeared to be glue stains. Decided to keep it anyway keeping the environment in mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars ever beautiful India, a world away, a lifetime away

Several years ago I worked on an exhibition that was seventeenth century Dutch-Indian in it study area, so I am very happy to see something of the British take on treasured parts of India. And before that, I had occasion to read several letters written, c1794, from Ceylon to home by the scion of a prosperous Hudson Valley family. This catalogue rounds out missing elements for me.Its reproduction of artworks and well-researched text add to the treasure. We all need to know more about this exceedingly fine art.

This is a must-see and must-read book for anyone even marginally interested in Indian and British colonial era art. The paintings are excellently reproduced and the essays informative, even enlightening. The cross-cultural dynamic is fascinating to observe and read about. Highly recommended.

Excelente introdução à arte decorrente do encontro de culturas ocidental e indiana. Impressionante, ver obras de artistas excepcionais como desconhecidos pelo ocidente. Como vislumbrar o lado oculto da lua pela primeira vez.
