Fearful: A Powerless Story (The Powerless Trilogy)

Description:

Set during the time of Fearless, a mysterious figure arrives in the kingdom of Ilya to witness the fight for the throne and the price it costs those sworn to defend the land in this beautiful and heart-wrenching story in the #1 New York Times bestselling Powerless trilogy.

Love too grand, it kills.

Mara never intended to set foot in Ilya again. But when the king makes a life-altering decision, her interest is piqued, and Death is determined to understand Kitt Azer’s mind if he is destined to join her in the Mors.

Spending time with the king while observing the castle’s inhabitants reminds Mara that there is more to life than just death. There is love. But even the purest of intentions spur revenge and the pursuit of power. And fate will have its way with all of them—to live, to rule, to love, and most certainly, to die…

5.0 out of 5 stars Pain & Suffering

K. · September 13, 2025

This book, although heartbreaking as all of Lauren Robert’s books are, was a great insight to Kitt’s story during the vents of Fearless. There was so much that we learned about him but also so much that we don’t know yet. Mara was such a well developed character, and is truly unexplainable. I loved this book and it was such a great edition to the Powerless series.

3.0 out of 5 stars Read if you want to know about Lenny and Blair. Skip if you don’t.

S.B. · October 5, 2025

If it wasn’t for Lenny and Blair, this story would have been a DNF for me. They are why there is 3 stars instead of 1. The writing style used in this novella compared to the rest of the series was brutally difficult to follow. There was so much jumping from places and times without feeling really connected. Through the eyes of Mara (Death who doesn’t care about the normal way of living things or time) and Kitt (whose mind is faltering and failing him at every new chapter). I thought this would be a different perspective, like Powerful. But it felt harsh, bitter, and still full of questions. Again, I liked seeing Lenny and Blair and knowing how their story ends. I’m dreading what the story might lead to with Kai’s daughter, Kit. Her power must reflect or compete with Death in some way in the future. I was intrigued by Mara at first but now I’m annoyed with her. This story wasn’t necessary to have enjoyed all of the Powerless series. But unclear yet if it will be important for future Lauren Roberts novels.

4.0 out of 5 stars What on earth!!?

T.B.B. · September 10, 2025

Genuinely—I’m going to need some time to write a review because I truly don’t even know what to say. I’m speechless… I thought this was going to clarify a lot of things. I’m actually even more confused and undecided how I feel about it all. 😅🫠 check back in.. 🫶🏽📖 SummaryFearful, a novella in the Powerless series, takes us back to the kingdom of Ilya where Kitt is determined to shatter the old ways and change the system itself. Mara never planned to return, but when the king makes a life-altering choice, she’s pulled back into Ilya’s tangled fate. With Death itself seeking to understand Azer’s destiny, Mara begins to see that life is more than endings — it’s love, sacrifice, vengeance, and the hunger for power. But even with the purest intentions, fate always has the final say: to live, to rule, to love, and ultimately, to die.⸻✨ Tropes & Vibes⚖️ Revolution / breaking the system👑 Kingdom on the brink of change💀 Death personified❤️ Fierce love and loyalty🔥 Revenge and dangerous ambition🌀 Fate’s inevitable twists👀 Court intrigue and secrets⚔️ Sacrifice at every turn———I honestly wish Lauren would’ve given us more from Kitt’s perspective. I finished this book feeling even more confused than when I started 🫠 The epilogue and Kai’s letter in the audiobook absolutely wrecked me—I was sobbing 😭—but the way things landed at the end was unsettling and left me questioning everything about where this universe is headed. What we thought we knew in Fearless turned out to be far from the truth, and I still don’t fully understand Kitt’s intentions or how everything with Mara (aka Death) ties together 😮 I did appreciate Lauren stepping out of her usual first-person style and experimenting with third person.. it gave the writing a poetic feel at times, but it also made things harder to follow. Watching Mara through the lens of Lenny and Blair’s love story should have been powerful, but the third-person distance kept me from fully connecting with them. Honestly, I hope they get their own book in this universe because I feel like we only got the surface of their story.I was SO glad to see Adena and Mak mentioned, but overall this novella carried a constant air of mystery that never really let up. By the end, I felt unsettled—and then the final conversation between Kai and Kitt absolutely ripped my heart in two, only to leave me EVEN MORE confused about what’s to come. Overall, this Novella felt like a fever dream to me 🤔😅 i’m excited to see where Lauren takes the rest of the universe because I just know we can’t end things like this.

Beautiful cover and edges have the pretty design. This book is such a stunning piece of art. Not a huge fan of the .5 books in a series. Finished it in a day and now it's a pretty art piece on my shelf!

2.0 out of 5 stars This book could have been 5 chapters long

A.C. · September 25, 2025

This was beyond a snoozfest. Kitt is not leading man material. He never matured. He never learned. He kept making the same mistakes over and over. There is no need to write an entire book about him and his obsession for his brother. Trust me when I say you miss absolutely nothing by not reading this book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Romantasy novella

S. · September 13, 2025

Fearful is book 3.5 in the Powerless series. The events happen at the same time as Fearless. You’re given a closer look at Lenny, Blair, and Kitt. It’s always interesting to get a behind the scenes look at the storyline, but it was hard for me to get into this book. I think it would be better as a tandem read with Fearless or maybe it’s just been too long since I finished the series. Not my favorite and 3 stars might be generous.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fearful 4.5 ⭐️

⭐️ 4.5/5 — Fearful by Lauren RobertsThis book was honestly amazing, and I highly recommend it. I would read it over and over again. I loved watching Kit grow as a character and finally understanding the reasons behind his actions—he gets a lot of hate, but Fearful shows so much of what he’s been through. Getting to know Mara and having all those lingering questions about her was such a fun mystery, and seeing Blair’s growth and her side of things just made it all even better. This book tied the entire series together perfectly and left me so satisfied.

Good condition and came on timeAmazing series by the way

Easy short read

S. · September 14, 2025

This was a nice insight into the mind of kitt and Blair in particular. It gave Blair depth and despite her awfulness, you feel bad for her and the meaningless life she has lived. This book has heavy undertones of sadness in all characters which i actually enjoyed. I enjoyed knowing more of Kitts thoughts and reasons, Blair’s, Lenny, the whole plan they made up. It was a great filler book. However I now have questions and feel like I need another book for those answers. Mara’s character was a great addition I did not see coming! I think she was well constructed but I want to know more about her like how she became death! Her first heart break! The things she knows and has seen.

The story follows Death(Mara) while she stalks Kitt, Blair and Lenny. If you don’t care for Blair or Lenny’s story I wouldn’t recommend reading. It was quite obvious in the ending of Fearless that Lenny and Blair were together, it was nice finding out how they got there but not really necessary. It was nice to see more of what Kitt was going through during Fearless. But it was very difficult to stay interested and I really had to push myself to finish reading. The ending had a lot of cryptic scenes and it was quite confusing.
