But when a handsome British sea captain is rescued from a nearby shipwreck, her destiny is forever changed.

Emma falls deeply in love with Oliver Harris, but their romance is not meant to be. Oliver returns to the sea, while Emma vows to forget him and pursue her own ambitions. When a handsome veterinarian arrives on the island to study the wild horses, Emma finds love again, but soon discovers that all is not as it seems…

1995: Mourning the death of her beloved grandmother, Joanna Griffin is shocked to learn that her grandfather once loved a young woman named Emma, but lies, betrayals, and catastrophic events separated them forever. As Joanna crosses an ocean to solve the secrets of her grandfather’s past, she learns that love is a powerful force, even mightier than the passage of time…

A shining thread of hope illuminates this epic tale of lost love and fallen dreams, set in the remote splendor of Nova Scotia and spanning decades.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book with amazing characters

J. · October 19, 2025

I’m wiping away the tears after finishing this wonderful book. The characters were well developed and the story line never dragged. It’s a special story about love and what it meant to each of the characters described herein. And of the place where the majority of the story happened.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Pathology of a life!!

K.C. · September 23, 2025

I loved the story line that never ever flat-lined. You would grab a breath and then be sucked under again, as another current seized you and cork screwed you back to the surface for another gasp and yet another plunge to the depths of misery and yet the sudden lifeline of hope! The playfulness of the sea in its' lagoons contrast with it's other wild and treacherous face, while the windswept island continues to see the manes of wild horses ruffled, the seals shaking their sodden coats, and their grasses making room for shifting sands. Against this buffeted background, a few people live and love, hide secrets, make mistakes, and get twisted and tangled by the web of life.A thrilling cohesive read with an unpredictable end!

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful story of love and loss!

J. · October 12, 2025

All Our Beautiful Goodbyes is a beautiful story that rips at the heartstrings of the reader. The author has created a memorable tale of two lovers who found each other and then faced unimaginable obstacles that forced them apart.I could feel the heartache and angst of these two main characters who fell in love and promised to be together but could not see what forces were to come to prevent them from being together. This was a wonderful story that I can’t get out of my mind. The scenes were gorgeous and I can visualize the roses on Sable Island, almost smell them and the horses that roamed the land and felt the brine of the sea as the wind carried it across the island.I highly recommend this book by this amazing author.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT, GREAT, read. LOVED IT.. highly recommend it.

G. · July 18, 2025

ALL OUR BEAUTIFUL GOODBYES is a GREAT READ. I loved it. Started it and could not put it down. Hours later I finished it, and WOW was it a great read. There is a wonderful love story, but it is more of a novel than a romance. It is set on a small Island off of Halifax - Nova Scotia. The story begins with a young woman that has been raised on the island. There are only about 40 people that live there with wild horses. They are a rescue center for ships that crash and sink. Sad thought but it is their job to get to the ships and rescue the crew and cargo if possible. They have a ship that comes to the island once a month to deliver goods and supplies. At 22 this young woman is quite intelligent having been raised by her very academic father. She has been shielded from the evils and horrors of the world. She is quite well read but no real experience with life. She has decided she wants to go to university on the mainland and now has to discuss it with her father. He won't be happy to let her go.These books are so hard to review for me because you can't write a review about a story that has several parts. There is sadness and sorrow, love and betrayal, hope and despair. It really has it all. The story takes the life of this young woman until she reaches the grandmother stage of her life. She has known loss and heartache. Parts of her heart will never heal. Once she leaves the island her life changes completely. This is a wonderful story with a great ending. There are no spicy scenes just stories of a great love between two people. They experience betrayal, lies, heartbreak and a renewal of life. It is a great read and a love story for the ages. It is easy to see why there are so many reviews. It is a feel-good book, and I highly definitely recommend it.This author is absolutely a great storyteller. The booki starts in the 1940's and goes up until 1999 or so. It moves right up with the times. All this author's books are ones you will never forget. Great stories.I was not paid for this review. I am not a writer, nor do I know one. I am not kin to this author. I am NOT A BOT. I am a reader, and this is my opinion, nothing more, nothing less. 7/18/25.

The setting, the scenery, the character development, flaws & all. The way we humans often jump into false conclusions...sometimes willfully diving into false info with our whole hearts, minds & souls.Beautifully told. [Might just before a 5☆ read.]

Life is complicated, and this author told the tale well. She is a very descriptive author - took me to Sable Island, the wild horses and the wild sea. Nova Scotia is as beautiful as depicted. This story was heartbreaking, yet heart warming- a very enjoyable read.

Another resounding hit by Julianne MacLean

S.G. · April 17, 2025

Another amazing story from Julianne MacLean! I've read most of her books, and have enjoyed them all. I especially enjoy the ones set in Nova Scotia (because I live there, and have been to most of the places she describes in her stories). I was so excited when she announced that 'All Our Beautiful Goodbyes' was available for pre-order last summer. I immediately ordered it and waited patiently for the release date. I've never been to Sable Island, but Julianne wrote it such a way that I could see, smell, and hear everything about the island as if I was actually standing there. It was also interesting to read about the character's time in Halifax at the house on Inglis Street. I live one street up from there, so I know that area extremely well. Thank you again, Julianne for another masterpiece!

terrific read. definitely a keeper

L. · March 25, 2025

Terrific read. Always enjoy Julianne MacLean's books, and this was no exception. Set partly in Sable Island and partly on mainland Nova Scotia, we follow Emma Clarkson as she meets and parts from - more than once - Oliver Harris.Great character development mixed with interesting history.Definitely a keeper.

Great idea but unfortunately not for me

J.R. · May 4, 2025

I loved the idea of the story, I have heard a lot about Sable Island. When we visited New York in 2016, I went to see Robert Dutesco's photographic exhibition, which was amazing. So I was super keen to read this story. It just seemed a little disjointed to me. Emma was too much of a people pleaser for my liking.Unfortunately, I found it really difficult to read this book although I wanted to love it.This is the first book by Julianne that I have not finished within two days.
