Tower Dungeon 1

Description:

Tsutomu Nihei, master of the mysterious architectural monolith, brings his genius to bear on the fantasy genre for the first time. Having established himself with hit series like Blame! and Knights of Sidonia, he has now created a gritty, dark fantasy world and populated it with evil sorcerors and unique undead horrors.
The ingenuous farmboy Yuva must accompany a contingent of knights through the increasingly dangerous floors of massive tower on the way to rescue the princess, Nihei bringing his unique sensibility to bear on a crumbling world of malformed creatures, wounded soldiers, and labyrinthine darkness.

An evil necromancer slays the king and carries off his daughter, secreting her in the legendary Dragon Tower. To save the princess, her steadfast Royal Guard assays the stronghold, but the way is blocked by powerful eldritch creatures… So, to supplement their forces in the face of mounting casualties, they press ordinary folks from the surrounding villages into service—including Yuva, a sturdy young farmboy with a strong back but no experience in battle, and only a battered old helm and wooden shield to protect him.
Master of science fiction Tsutomu Nihei (
Blame!, Knights of Sidonia) turns his unique storytelling voice and architectural eye to fantasy for the first time, offering a dark, gritty tale of swords and sorcery, bravery and adventure, great heroes and ultimate evil.
Gird your loins, heft your blade, and enter the Dragon Tower.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Fantasy Manga

M. · September 3, 2025

Great manga. The story is like a darker version of Delicious in Dungeon, Etrian Odyssey, etc. The artwork is great and the characters are appealing enough for a first volume. If you like high fantasy it’s hard to be disappointed by this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vague but enthralling

The human characters are odd. Not odd looking, but odd behaving. I'm still trying to figure out if it's the cultural way of this world, or just the characters are still in that amorphous state of early story. The art is the star. It sets the stage for this, I don't want to call it grimdark, but it is dire and bleak. The art draws you in and holds you page after page.As we are introduced to the hierarchy, or the hegemons of this realm and see how strange and insectoid they are, like armored larvae, I found myself wondering if that's maybe why the characters don't seem to react to the eldritch-esque horrors of the tower dungeon with the terror or repulsion you would expect from them?In any case it was a great buy. I took a chance and picked it up. No regrets. I already ordered Tower Dungeon 2, and pre-ordered 3. Recommend if you like strange fantasy and moody, impactful art. It's complex but concise as much as line art can be.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic Nihei in with a fantasy story

s. · September 14, 2025

Farmer Yuva gets swept up in a kingdom's fight against a powerful foe atop a looming tower. Their princess has been captured and they're exhausting all of their forces to hollow out the enemies within the tower to make their way through each floor in order to save her. It's Yuva's turn to enlist and help fight against the monsters to get her out. This has the makings of a dungeon crawler with hints of a political drama as well. Nihei usually does sci-fi stories, but here he takes on fantasy. The monsters definitely have otherworldly characteristics and the dungeon itself feels very alien, so the sci-fi influences are still strong.

I love this authors work. Blame is my all time favorite manga. This feels like a medieval version of Blame and I adore it so far. His architecture creativity keeps me coming back over and over. I love the simplicity and the magnitude of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful art

I love the vibe and theme of the story so far. The art style is messy but adds to the story in a positive way. Definitely recommend a read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but gloomy

Monster has slain the king and taken his successor, the princess, as a prisoner at the top of an enormous floating tower. Most of the royal guard has already perished trying to save her, so they order a conscript, one man from every village.Yuva is sent to the tower where only a handful of guards are still able to fight. When they realise how strong Yuva is, they make him their porter and set out to conquer the tower. It doesn’t go well, although they manage to slay a bad monster with Yuva’s help. And so the parliament orders the rescue effort stopped. But there’s still Yuva left and he’s not ready to return home. This was a fairly good, straightforward dungeon story. It’s a bit gloomy and the art amplifies the mood. Yuva stood out, and not everyone was happy about it. The volume ends before Yuva’s rescue effort starts. While I liked the story, the joyless atmosphere doesn’t entice me to continue.

Great start

My review after reading it:It feels like someone played dark souls and thought to themselves “this sucks without a tangible story, I’m going to make one up!”None of the people are “cursed undead” so to speak. It’s just that’s the vibes I get.Someone who’s good at telling interesting stories with cool lore and architecture got really mad while playing dark souls and decided to do something about it.It’s good for the first book. Lots of potential.
