5.0 out of 5 stars You must be able to read, really, reading is basic
Good book
5.0 out of 5 stars If you live with chronic pain & illness.....THIS is a MUST HAVE!
As far as I'm concerned, Toni Bernhard authors the BEST books for those of us who live with chronic pain/illness. Rather than wallowing in our misery and suffering every day, Toni offers wonderful suggestions and insights on how we can LIVE better....rather than just EXIST.I run a Facebook group called "Attitude of Gratitude with Chronic Pain" and Toni publishes all of her articles in the group as well as being a guest on my live broadcast. I ALWAYS suggest to my members that they buy and read this book (as well as "How to Be Sick") if they'd like to change the narrative of their life and come to a place of ACCEPTANCE. I promise you that after reading Toni's books, you will look at your suffering VERY differently and realize that life does NOT have to end when we become sick or injured.I cannot rate this highly enough. I live an excellent life today and that is due in HUGE part to Toni's books and articles.
4.0 out of 5 stars Self Help for Chronic Pain
This was a terrific source of information for those suffering from chronic pain and illness and it is written by a woman who suffers from pain and illness so severe she is mostly bedridden. She talks about the feelings the chronically ill have including being a burden to others, not being able to do the things you used to do and how to advocate for yourself and talk to those who you live with. I appreciated this very personal approach which is different than the usual scientific studies we find in books about pain. The author gives good advice based on what things have worked for her and I will refer back to this book often.
5.0 out of 5 stars Made a huge difference for me
Amazing I was laughing out loud not because it’s funny but because so many things she said were, yes yes; yes that happened to me, yes I do that, yes I think that, yes I feel that. I actually found myself raising my hand when she was telling stories about things that happened to her friends because it was my exact story. I don’t remember her interviewing me.There are so many difficulties that the chronically ill face from being misunderstood and dismissed by society to physical suffering to losing your identity and all that you were to isolation to dealing with the medical industry. This book provides advice, understanding and support, a way to process the change and loss while also helping you to find peace with your new self and society’s misconceptions. By some one that has and is experiencing it.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This is such a great book. I am journaling along with it, so using it more like a workbook. It’s fantastic and really got me thinking about aspects of my life that I need to change. Change isn’t easy, though. Definitely buy a notebook or a journal and some good writing utensils, too!
3.0 out of 5 stars Bought it for a friend
The friend is suffering from chronic pain and said she didn't like the book.
5.0 out of 5 stars Reassuring and supportive
Many books about chronic illness set up unrealistic expectations - this book does not. Toni Bernhard is encouraging & compassionate without being a Pollyanna; not every problem has a solution. The chapters on loneliness and dealing with unhelpful conversations were especially valuable. Highly recommended!
4.0 out of 5 stars Very motivational book.
Bought it for the meditation techniques and was very glad to see that in the beginning of the book it talked in details of the different societies and forums out their that help people with chronic pain. Very informative. What I didn't like was the subtle way it took you to the Buddhist philosophy it should just talk about Budism and let you make up your mind if you agree with it or not.
Extraordinarily sane and helpful
Yet another wonderful book from Tony Bernhard, all she writes is sane and helpful, articles and books. With the wisdom and clarity of a psychologist, and the peace and equanimity of a Buddhist, Tony Berhard tells us her story of enjoying life while at the same time enduring chronic pain and illness, from which we can learn tons. Thank you

If you're either sick and dealing with chronic pain or illness or a caregiver, this is a must readToni's Bernhard just finds the perfect words to help
The best book I've come across on living as contentedly as possible with ME/CFS
I cannot sing the praises of this book enough. I recommend it to anyone struggling with chronic pain and illness who wants to be happy.I have ME/CFS and I got this book during the scary process of diagnosis. If I hadn't been reading this book while going through that, I am sure I would have become much more hopeless about my health. This book made the journey that much easier to be on.One year on, I still haven't found a book as useful as this one for dealing with ME/CFS. The ideas in the book have made a lot of moments for me easier. I'm more ok with when it's difficult to sleep, and when I'm trapped at home and unable to see my friends, and with pain, because of this book.If you want to see if Toni Bernhard's writing resonates with you, she has some articles on Psychology Today. Her writing is personable, with easy language. She is self aware and isn't afraid to talk about the deep difficult things. She seeks to find the proactive and kind ways of thinking, without ignoring the pain. This is what I strive to be and she demonstrates how it's done through this book.I felt better while I was reading the book. I intend to re-read it soon. There was a lot in there that I knew didn't apply to me at the time but would do in future. Since it's explaining a mindset, which is difficult to hold on to under challenging circumstances, it bears re-reading.If you like meditating you will be familiar with the sort of mindset in the book. If you haven't meditated before, this book might inspire you to start. However, meditation is not necessary to get a lot out of this book, so even if you don't give a fig about meditating, it's still going to be useful to you.
Toni Rocks!
I am able to relate to each and everything the author said in the book. This is what my life is about: being chronically ill and coping with it moment by moment. Chronic illness takes a toll on everyone no matter what background they belong to -- family, country, race, religion, sex. Everyone has to take the load of more than being ill. Sickness is just one of the jobs they have. Being chronically ill is a full-time job and everything else that person does is an add-on.Thanks, Toni for the frank sharing of enlightening words.
