Family Systems and Congregational Life: A Map for Ministry

Description:

Experienced pastor and seminary teacher R. Robert Creech helps pastoral leaders increase their effectiveness by applying family systems theory to congregational life and ministry. Creech introduces readers to the basic concepts of Bowen Family Systems Theory, applies family theory to the work of ministry in church settings, and connects systems thinking to the everyday aspects of congregational ministry, such as preaching, pastoral care, leadership, spiritual formation, and interpreting biblical texts. Each chapter contains discussion questions, and there are five helpful appendixes with supplemental information about Bowen theory.

5.0 out of 5 stars without a map, people get lost

Every pastor ought to love their people well by reading this book. And begin the lifelong journey of growing their basic self as a servant driven by principles, and refusing to let a lack of awareness hamper them. Without emotional intelligence—leadership is limited at best and harming at worst.People in ministry (regardless of the role) need to read* this book. For leaders it ought to be a requirement. To try and shepherd God’s people without understanding differentiation of self is a recipe for mediocrity. Here’s the bottom line: your ability to lovingly guide and care for anxious people and situations in this anxiety-driven world we live in—is essential to caring for souls. The navigation of conflict and crises with sinners is the reality of ministry and the joy.Even if your main priority is the reading of the word and prayer, people will remember how they felt when with you more than what you said. And if you’d like some more teachings on Bowen Theory, check out his protégé’s book, Extraordinary Relationships, by Roberta Gilbert. I’ve recommended that book for years and was thrilled to see Creech’s fantastic merging of Scripture and Bowen to produce a Christ-centered roadmap to help churches grow together for the glory of God.*Read it or listen to it. Where’s the Audible version? Maybe I can make it👀🙏🏾😂

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential Family Systems book for any faith based leader

S.C. · May 26, 2019

Robert Creech has a deep heritage in Family Systems Theory or Bowen Theory and it shows in this wonderful book. He quickly and succinctly offers amp overview of the essence of the theory before then applying it masterfully to congregational life. Especially for preaching ministers who have not previously been exposed to this theory, I would rate this book as essential reading to thrive in the modern church context.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for systems theory nerds

S. · December 16, 2024

As a college professor, I teach a course on congregational dynamics. I have used this book as a textbook. Creech thoroughly explains family systems theory (FST) for the church leader, providing helpful stories along the way. My students feel confident after reading the first couple of chapters. I appreciate the remaining chapters in which Creech applies FST to bible stories and spiritual formation opportunities. At that point, the students feel the book becomes repetitive, and they do not connect with the chapters as well. I suspect that ministers, with the wisdom and maturity that comes with serving in churches, feel these chapters are a little more helpful to them. All in all, I recommend the book, especially to the systems theory nerds that like to collect other points of view on applying FST to leadership.

5.0 out of 5 stars Family Systems for More than Ministry

Heartfelt and informative. Enough real life examples to help Bowen's Family Systems concept come to life.Great book.

2.0 out of 5 stars If only the book stopped after Part 2

T.M. · March 11, 2021

The first 2 parts of this 3 part book were interesting. I disagree with some of the points made but still interesting to be exposed to another perspective. Part 3 is unacceptable in my opinion. The Bible is primarily about God. It is dangerous to interpret it without acknowledging the role that God plays in each and every story.
