The book gives you a very good illustration of Canaan history from Bronze Age to the modern legacy. It talks about the tribes in Canaan as well as foreign forces that moved the history in Canaan. A great book to get an overview of the political, cultural, and historical background of Canaan when studying the Bible

This is a wonderful summary of the history of the land of Canaan and the Canaanites who occupied it. It is more or less diachronic, starting with the emergence of Canaan, then proceeding through the Bronze and Iron Ages, and finishing up with the legacy of the Canaanites. Please note that it is only a short monograph - don't expect a greatly detailed and extensive treatment. However, the book is footnoted and has a good bibliography. It's wonderful to have as a nice reference summary.The book does include Israel and Judah but covers these two Iron-Age Canaanite nations in the wider context of Canaan that also includes Ammon, Edom, Moab, Phoenicia, and Philistia. If you're seeking information specific to Israel, tis might not be the book for you.There is some good material on religion and also everyday living, including Canaanite houses and households.There are wonderful color pictures and maps throughout, and the printing is of high quality.I have two criticisms. First, some of the maps are too small - I needed a magnifier to read the names on many of the maps. Fortunately, the printing was excellent, and so even the tiniest print was legible with a magnifier. My second criticism is that there appear to be problems with some of the early maps. In Maps 1.1, 1.2, and 1.4, Jerusalem seems to have migrated over to the West Bank of the Jordan valley. I'm not sure what happened here, since most of the maps seem very good. Perhaps it had something to do with the ghastly inconsistencies of some piece of drawing software.

This was a good quick read - I read it in one day. It answers many questions about basic Canaanite history. It could have been more in-depth about a few things, but in general it does the job.

This book gives a good general overview of the several groups of people living in the region and the conflicts that flourished among them. Exiting under very powerful neighbors, Egypt and Assyria who constantly battled for dominance. Reminded me somewhat of the city states in Greece facing each other under the threat of of Persia.

For some reason, there's a dearth of books presenting a neutral, secular, academic view of the Canaanites, arguably one of the most important cultures of the ancient world. I was hoping this book would fill in some of the gaps in my knowledge. While it does recognize recent scholarship, both archaeology- and DNA-based, that recognizes the Phoenicians, the Hebrews and other, less famous branches of Northwest Semitic speaking peoples as part of the same family and civilization, and while Buck does give more or less equal attention to each of the Canaanite kingdoms (perhaps rightly saving much of her focus to the Phoenician/Punic branch that dominated the Mediterranean before the rise of Rome), the book is less an introduction to the Canaanites than an abstract of what should have been a richer, more in-depth work. In addition, the maps and other graphics are amateurish -- for example, the position of Jerusalem shifts position from map to map, now in its actual location, then to the east of the Jordan River, then somewhere in the Galil.
