The Art of PCB Reverse Engineering (Standard Edition): Unravelling the Beauty of the Original Design (PCB Reverse Engineering Series Collection)

Description:

About this item:

PCB reverse-engineering is a skill that requires more than just an acquaintance with electronics. We're not talking about recreating the PCB artwork here, but the schematic diagram itself. To the uninitiated, it is a difficult if not impossible undertaking reserved only for the determined and qualified. The author, however, believes that having a right mindset and being equipped with the right knowledge will enable even an average electronics engineer to do it.

This book will not teach you to use electronic automation design (EDA) tools to produce or reproduce PCBs nor give you a formal study on PCB structural design and fabrication. It does, however, impart knowledge on PCBs that relate to reverse-engineering and teaches you how to create PCB layouts and schematic diagrams using Microsoft Visio in a technical capacity.

This standard edition illustration-rich book covers things which you'll need to take note before you begin, the necessary basic preparation work to perform, creating layout shapes prior to drafting the PCB artwork, knowing what is a good schematic diagram and the right strategies to use for the type of PCBs (analog, digital, mixed-signals). You will also learn advanced topics such as layering, shape data and Shapesheet, generating reports for bill of materials, and even deciphering programmable logic devices!

About the Author

NG KENG TIONG is a Principal Engineer at Singapore Technologies (ST) Electronics Limited, a subsidiary of ST Engineering. Upon graduation from the Singapore Polytechnics, he signed up with the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) as an aircraft technician and worked in the E-2C Hawkeye repair bay, servicing the aircraft's avionics using automated test systems (CAT-IIID and RADCOM) and other in-house test equipment..Upon invitation, he left the RSAF after his first contract and joined his present company, doing test program development and PCB diagnostics using Schlumberger S700 series testers. Since then, he has worked on other test platforms such as the Teradyne Spectrum(tm) 8800 series, the Westest-DATS/2000 test station, and some special-to-type-equipment (STTE) of similar nature. . He also has experience in logic simulation using HHB Systems CADAT(tm) software and the CATS- 10000(tm) hardware modeler, as well as Teradyne's LASAR(tm) simulator..He has worked with engineers from companies such as Elbit and Thales, and recently completed two test benches for testing the transmitter and servo amplifier control of a naval sonar system. . In the course of his work, he encountered many printed circuit boards and electronic modules without schematic diagrams or documentation. That started him on the journey of doing PCB reverse engineering, in part or total, to perform the necessary troubleshooting for repair. Over time, he has refined the skill into an art for which this book is all about.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential (and arguably groundbreaking) book for the niche career of hardware reverse engineering.

I can see why this can be a deal breaker to some people, but can we just appreciate the fact that there is now a relatively inexpensive resource that goes over PCB RE?PCB reverse engineering of course is a smaller subset of Hardware RE, but a very critical component in the process of reverse engineering hardware overall. With the applications and intentions to resurrect legacy designs, or exploit them for security research. Coming from a design background definitely helped me in my first year of hardware reverse engineering, but that only gets you so far. The actual formal processes used to conduct a task like PCB reverse engineering exist, but most are proprietary/trade-secrets or hidden deep within academic literature that is out of reach of most people (Expensive textbooks, academic paper database subscriptions, behind paywalls, etc). It also doesn't help that even the resources that are "easy" to search for freely are fragmented, lacks depth, and sometimes out of date. Experts like Joe Grand, Joe Fitzpatrick, Dmitry Nedospasov, Colin O'Flynn, Samy Kamkar, The exploitee.rs, Xipter, etc are the names of a few individuals/groups who have presented at security conferences and taught workshops. They are the reliable few that you can get the most insight from and up to date resources (papers and talks on YouTube) available for free online. This is where Mr. Tiong's book sets the precedent, by publishing the thorough process (and art) of printed circuit board reverse engineering. Yes! I dare to say it, Mr. Tiong is the first engineer to do this, I can only hope that this will inspire other hardware reverse engineers to publish their methodology and processes. I also purchased his newest book: PCB-RE: Tools & Techniques PCB-RE: Tools & Techniques, which is the sequel to this book and also very essential!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough and systematic reference, to my knowledge - first of its kind.

I've started doing component level repair of electronics with (and without) schematics more then 40 years ago, which activity often involves reverse-engineering of printed circuit boards. Although over the years my technical interests have shifted into particle beam instrumentation, electron microscopy, and focused ion beam technology fields, till this day - and more often then not - PCB repairs have returned multiple multi-million-dollar accelerators, FIB, and SEM instruments back to operation, delivering great satisfaction and some profit. Many of the methods described by Keng Tiong in great details are similar to the approaches I've developed, but some of the techniques are different, and as effective and useful as efficient and practical. Systematic approach and collection of useful information presented in his books are not only invaluable for a novice approaching PCB-level reverse engineering, but also very interesting reading and hands-on reference for professionals. Focus on reverse engineering instead of original design provides unique perspective into workings of electronics, and in my opinion books by Keng Tiong (I've got all three of them) are must-read for anybody trying to develop good understanding of electronics - together with writings by Paul Horowitz and Windfield HIll, Phil Hobbs, Jim Williams, Bob Piece, Howard Johnson and Marting Graham, Sam Godwasser, and other world's top electronics experts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most useful book on the subject ever!

Just received my copy of this book from Bolo. Amazing! - this is going to be one of the most useful electronics books I have ever bought.Visio has always been one of my favourite tools, and I would consider myself quite an expert, but this is teaching me some wonderful new tricks! Looking forward to putting some of this into practice [ I always was a masochist :-) ].

I am 1/2 way through getting to grips with the Visio software. I’m looking forward to completing and purchasing the next book in the series.

Must have it!
