Eugene Petersen will go down as one of the great theologians and thinkers of modern time. A pastor of many years, a scholar par excellent, and a great encouragement to the "common person" who wants to learn, follow, and know the ways of Jesus Christ. This is a wonderful volume. I'll use it for a very long time.

17 timesThat’s how many times one of the greatest preachers writers of all time the late Eugene Peterson was told no from different companies to publishing his book “A Long Obedience In The Same Direction: Discipleship in an Instant Society.”Filled with insights, the book is a treasure and must read for followers of Jesus for two reasons.1. A book ahead of its time. The publishing year for the book was in 1980. What we consider “the good old days” in 2025 was in just as much danger of turning away from daily obedience to Christ as Christian’s are today. We need not panic that our time is a unique one when adressing sin and faithfullness to Christ. As scripture reminds us: “There is nothing new under the sun.”2. Perseverance for Jesus. Peterson’s original intention in writing the book was getting resources in the hands of the church he was pastoring. The company that took on his book in his words gave him confidence, but I would add also, the journey gave him humility. It’s easy to fall for the temptation that Jesus is “over there” with all the yes’s and your nos are the devils work or your failures. Peterson while I’m sure had seasons of frustration, stuck with taking Jesus seriously, and saw his vision through to help his church, launch into a 30 year career of writing, including his famous “The Message” translation of the Bible.As we wait for our flight and the family sleeps while waiting, I am grateful for this giant in the faith and will treasure this book a long time. The book is full of good lines, but three will stay with me a long time. May they encourage you. Come Lord Jesus come!“Humphrey Bogart once defined a professional as a person who “did a better job when he didn’t feel like it.” That goes for a Christian too. Feelings don’t run the show (🔥🔥🔥). There is a reality deeper than our feelings. Live by that. Eric Routley thinks that, colloquially, to bless means to “speak well of.”The Lord has spoken well of you; now you speak well of him.”“Obedience has a history”“If you do not convey joy in your demeanor and gestures and speech, you will not be an authentic witness for Jesus Christ. Delight in what God is doing is essential in our work.”

Great read. Helpful commentary on the traditional songs the Israelites sang as they journeyed “up” the road to Jerusalem for Passover. Good applications.

Product arrived in dirty and gross condition. I see no option to just do an exchange and the book is now priced higher than what I paid.4 stars because the book is probably great and the issue is with Bolo, not the book!

One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. This book was a reminder of what true faithfulness to Jesus should look like. That not always is our walk with Jesus easy but that there is beauty in longevity.

Eugene Peterson’s prophetic voice speaks profoundly to a modern world even more driven toward the instant than when this book was written. The message that slow intentional discipleship (that is becoming more like Jesus) is the ONLY way to spiritual health is difficult to swallow but absolutely true. There are no shortcuts on this journey.

Great read as a daily devotional. Love the emphasis on long term discipleship to Jesus. Wonderful insights into the Psalms of Ascent. Great for a spiritual MOT. Recommend reading something like this at least once a year.
A classic that is as relevant today as it was years ago.
Read this if you dare…it has taught me that the speed of my Christian walk has not impressed God nor brought me closer to him. One deliberate step after the other is the right pace.
