Love and Other Words

Description:

After a decade apart, childhood sweethearts reconnect by chance but how many words will it take for them to figure out where it all went wrong? From the New York Times bestselling authors of the “delightful” (Shelf Awareness) The Unhoneymooners.

The story of the heart can never be unwritten.

Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away.

But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos—the first and only love of her life—the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve. Once upon a time, Elliot was Macy’s entire world—growing from her gangly bookish friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her mother...only to break it on the very night he declared his love for her.

Told in alternating timelines between Then and Now, teenage Elliot and Macy grow from friends to much more—spending weekends and lazy summers together in a house outside of San Francisco devouring books, sharing favorite words, and talking through their growing pains and triumphs. As adults, they have become strangers to one another until their chance reunion. Although their memories are obscured by the agony of what happened that night so many years ago, Elliot will come to understand the truth behind Macy’s decade-long silence, and will have to overcome the past and himself to revive her faith in the possibility of an all-consuming love.

Love and Other Words absolutely wrecked me in the best way. Christina Lauren crafted a story that had me laughing, swooning, and literally crying. It’s the perfect blend of tender romance, raw vulnerability, and a little steam to balance it all out. The dual timelines were masterfully done, weaving the past and present together in a way that made the emotional payoff hit even harder. The shifts in time lined everything up perfectly and kept me fully invested in Macy and Elliot’s journey. What stood out most to me was how deeply it made me feel. I experienced every emotion right alongside them. It’s not just a love story, it’s a story about grief, healing, and second chances. This is easily one of my new all-time favorites.

4.0 out of 5 stars super sweet!

A great, sweet little read! Very cute and romantic. Not too heavy on the angst and overall a great little love story!

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful, heartbreaking story of grief and second-chance love

B.S. · April 2, 2023

I’d heard about this book for a while, and it seemed like everyone who read it loved it. I’ve read one Christina Lauren book before and really liked it, so I figured I would enjoy this one, and that was definitely the case!Macy and Elliot’s story is so sweet, complicated, heartbreaking, and swoon-worthy. I loved how the book flashed between the past and the present, with their story woven throughout both timelines. From the start, you know something horrible tore the two apart when they were teenagers, but you don’t know exactly what happened. This keeps you in suspense for the entire story, but the ending wraps it all up nicely.I loved the easy conversation and immediate bond these two had from the time they met as very young teenagers. I loved that they were both book fanatics and talked about their favorite words when they saw each other after time apart. Although Macy and Elliot were separated for eleven years because of a huge miscommunication and traumatizing event, and even with all the drama between them when they see each other after those eleven years, they still seem so able to pick up where they left off. I believe this is the result of them being the closest of childhood friends before their feelings developed into something more.I also loved Macy’s relationship with her parents. Her mother passed away a few years before the story starts, but the way Macy thinks of and remembers her shows how close they were. And her relationship with her dad is different, but still so beautiful. This book will make you laugh and cry. It will give you all the angst of teenage love and bring you through processing grief and second-chance love as an adult. If you’ve never read anything by the very talented writing duo Christina Lauren, or you’re just looking for a truly heartfelt love story, I highly recommend you read this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Such a good read

Spoilers ....spoilers .......spoilersMacey and Elliots is a story for the books. Love the characters. The story was greatly written. The kind of love they had for ever other is the love everyone is looking for , i believe they had such a great love since they did start as such great friends that told each other everything. I knew Elliot cheated from the beginning but i did want to know his side he was taken advantage of and Emma was just a girl that wanted what she had with him and was willing to do that to ruin them. I would have like to know if he ever had a conversation with her. The pain that she went through to lose one parent is hard enough but to lose the surviving parent only a couple of years later is unbearable and to do it with thinking your boyfriend cheated on you is what makes it worse. I wish she would have reached out but i understand why she didnt. Love the end of the story that they got their happy ending they deserved it after all that heartbreak and years apart.

Any easy read of a burgeoning love that falls apart only to be put back together again. I enjoyed learning about the growth of the characters, but feel like it took too long to get to the point of their break up. I also wasn't a fan of the open door scenes (but that's just a personal preference).

Love and other words is truly a special book.Christina Lauren did an excellent job portraying both characters especially Elliot. Also loved how Macy is in the medical field. Felt I could relate being in a similar profession.Macy, a pediatric resident is engaged to a well known artist who has a child. Things are going smoothly until she runs into an old childhood best friend/lover (Elliot) at a coffee shop. The story unfolds with two timelines. One is in the past from Macys POV when her mother dies and her father finds a weekend home to help heal their family. The other is in the present again from Macys POV when her and Elliot run into each other after 11 years. The story unfolds from there and their love story gets SO good. I could seriously not stop reading. This is a perfect best friends to lovers and second chance romance trope! This really showed how a strong friendship can overcome the biggest obstacles.I gave this ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars because for one it took me surprise with all the emotional aspects that seriously had me tearing up!! I adore and admire the special friendship and connection between the two main characters Macy and Elliot which created a love for each other that is absolutely unmatched. This book left me with a big smile at the end. Highly recommend!

An Emotional Read

N. · December 31, 2024

Love and Other Words is a beautifully woven second-chance romance that explores love, loss, and forgiveness in a deeply moving way. The story begins with an intriguing mystery surrounding why Macy and Elliot, once inseparable, grew apart. This suspense is skilfully maintained, keeping readers captivated until the very end.The author has crafted both complex characters beautifully. The growth of Macy and Elliot as individuals and their fight to rekindle their love are among the book's standout highlights. Macy is a well-developed character. Her journey through loss and back to love is poignant and deeply relatable. My heart broke for her multiple times while reading. Her grief over her mother’s death is portrayed with sensitivity, especially through her mother’s list, adding layers of emotion and insight into Macy’s character. Lauren handle themes of grief with remarkable depth, and Macy's journey through the pain of losing both her parents is heartbreaking, with her inner reflections particularly moving. The story doesn’t just show the rekindling of a romantic connection, it also depicts the reunion of two best friends, making it feel as though Macy is reclaiming a piece of herself.I fell in love with Elliot a bit more with each of his scenes. Throughout the book, I found myself wondering how a man could be so perfect. I seriously wanted to hug him for everything he went through in both his teen and adult life. I wish the author had given us his point of view, so we could understand his character more deeply and hear his inner thoughts. His declarations of love were some of the book's best moments, I couldn’t stop smiling as I read them. One of the book’s highlights is its dual-timeline structure. We witness Macy and Elliot’s tender, youthful bond, as well as the complex emotions they navigate as adults. Their moments together as teens especially the innocent jealousy and the slow-burn connection are touching, offering a nostalgic view of young love. I only wish we had more scenes of their reconnection as adults, as I loved the way they rebuilt their relationship from the ground up. However, the involvement of third-party relationships for both main characters felt somewhat unnecessary and disrupted the story’s momentum, slightly detracting from the otherwise touching narrative. Also, it was seriously disappointing the way the author didn’t throw much light on how Elliot was sexually assaulted, I didn’t appreciate the way it was still addressed as “cheating” in last chapters. Despite this, the way Macy and Elliot work through their misunderstandings and rebuild their love is heartwarming.Overall, Love and Other Words is an emotional, beautifully written romance with just the right mix of nostalgia, heartbreak, and redemption.

Emotional, funny, and with so much heart

Christina Lauren has done it again... Love and Other Words is authentic, romantic, and well-written.A romance that captures readers' hearts and keeps them glued to the pages. I couldn't help but fall in love with Macy and Elliot. Christina Lauren's writing is so good that the reading went too fast, and, in the end, I wasn't ready to let the story and characters go.The young Macy and Elliot sound so familiar with their dialogues, their routine, and those fears that brought me back to adolescence.I always love characters driven story, and I appreciated how the characters here, through their actions, appear so flawed, and realistic. It's so easy to feel connected with them, and I was so thrilled to know more about the events that took them apart for a decade-long silence.Emotional, funny, and with so much heart, Love and Other Words, is absolutely a book I recommend, and that definitely lives up to the hype for me.

Absolutely loved this book!!
