It is so important to teach young kids about Sept. 11 to keep the memory of that day alive for generations to come. But how do you appropriately do that? This book is the best tool I have found to do so. My three boys have been reading this book since it came out on each Sept. 11 which passes. It's a great picture book that tells the positive story of a real hero that day, exemplifying what it means to be a person "for others" and living with virtue, while also some details on what happened that fateful day. It spurs good conversation too. Now my kids ask each year to read it - a family tradition of sorts but it makes me feel like they will continue to learn about and honor this day as they grow into adults. The world needs more Welles Crowthers, that's for sure.

It's probably safe to assume that on the morning of September 11, 2001, 24 year old Welles Crowther prepared for an average Tuesday, never dreaming that before lunchtime he would perform acts of heroism which would put 24's Jack Bauer to shame.From her vantage point as Welles's sister and mother of a growing family, the author tells her brother's amazing story in a manner that is always positive, never frightening. In roughly the first half of the book the reader learns from a child's standpoint how Welles developed his interest in fire safety and how the famous red bandanna became a permanent part of his wardrobe. From that comes the details of Welles' non-stop efforts to save as many lives as possible in the brief time he was given that day. Personally I was amazed at the author's ability to present a short, action-packed story meant to inspire admiration not fear.John Crowther's bright, colorful illustrations serve as a backdrop to reassure the reader that Welles' s story is true and was given by primary witnesses whose lives Welles saved that day. Once again, the information is provided in a simple, child-friendly manner.Son and brother, fire-fighter, athlete and loyal friend, Welles Crowther was a living American super-hero whose intelligence and dashing bravery make him an exciting role model. Highly recommend this book!

I purchased this book to share the story of a good human, Wells, with my 4 year old grandson. I believe the courage of our first responders and citizens during and after 9/11 should be remembered every year and I plan to read this book to my grandson every September. "The Man in the Red Bandanna" is beautifully written to show Well's courage in helping others. I hope my grandson will grow into a brave good human caring for his fellow humans as well.

I teach 4th grade Social Studies. This book was a great resource in helping the students understand the events that happened prior to their birth. It is age appropriate and is well written.

I was able to tell my younger students this story, because the author was able to tell it without extreme detail that might upset smaller children. We were reviewing all the books that we read, this semester, and this book was one of the most popular. Good job! Good job!
