The Adlard Coles Book of Mediterranean Cruising: 4th edition

Description:

From the islands of the Aegean to the Straits of Gibraltar, the allure of the Med is unsurpased. No other cruising ground marries cast troves of shoreside history with unique and easily accessible cuisine, or islands. Although the Mediterranean provides wonderfully diverse cruising opportunities, it can also deliver surprises to the unwary. Rod Heikell, the acknowledged expert on Mediterranean sailing, provides sound advice in this fourth edition, with updates on: anchoring, berthing bow or stern-to, what weather to expect (and how to avoid the worst of it), facilities and the coasts of keeping a boat around the Med, plus information on navigation, popular routes, formalities, and what to expect ashore.

Each country around the Mediterranean is covered, and there's even a handy section on shoe-string cruising for those on a tight budget.

This is the perfect guide for anyone cruising in the Mediterranean, conveying the magic of this unique sea as well as giving practical, first-hand advice on sailing in these enticing waters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and well written

This book was a pleasure to read and provided very useful information, helping me prepare for Med cruising.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very useful reading

O.A.E. · January 10, 2014

You can find "all" kind of tips and advices for The Mediterrian sailor in one "small" book. You ca also use this books advices if you sail in The Pasific or so on.

5.0 out of 5 stars great intro

O.E.T. · November 27, 2020

Great introduction to the Middle Sea, you would of course need the actual pilot books themselves by Rod Heikel for your planned theater of operations.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not so useful

K.K. · December 6, 2023

Meh. Wouldn't charter the Med with this. Lots of useless advice about buying a boat, and then just a paragraph on each venue. The opposite of what I expected.

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT WHAT I EXPECTED

A.D. · August 27, 2023

Thought I was getting a book that provided mostly objective information about ports and such when cruising the Mediterranean. Instead, a substantial amount of the content was fairly basic and opinionated like suggesting polarized glasses or addressing "global warming". Really?! Then again, all the photos are that of sailboats and come from that perspective. This edition was published in 2018 and the world has changed a lot since then. Hoping there is something better out there, especially if you planning a powerboat trip in the Mediterranean.

4.0 out of 5 stars Realistic look at the idea.

A.O. · August 14, 2011

If anyone is contemplating this adventure, this book will definitely put things into perspective. It gives you enough information to make an informed decision but it also took away the romance of the idea.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but I expected more and deep info!!!

L.B.S. · April 7, 2014

Could go deeper in those themes, a little superficial. notthing more to say, they request a big sentence to describe

Excellent reference and more

J. · August 26, 2013

I bought this book having done some sailing in the Med and going again this year (to Turkey). I used Rod's Almanac last summer and found it fantastic. This is a different book, and really is quite uniquely useful. Rod has been cruising the Med for years, thinking hard the whole time about what people will need to know. This book covers so much of this experience and distils it down for those of us who would like to do some cruising ourselves. Sometimes people wrote these books and they are wide of the mark because they can't quite judge the needs of people far less experienced than themselves. This is the opposite and I recommend it very highly.

Top tips!

Full of great tips.

Also good comments on budgetary considerations

Very informative. Heikel gives you the feel of the different places he visited, and helps you prioritize your ports of call. Also good comments on budgetary considerations.

Very lightweight info, nothing useful as far as passage planning goes. Very expensive for an out of date ebook. Still mentions travellers Cheques for instance

Il libro è dedicato a lettori britannici che vogliono navigare alle nostre latitudini ma offre interessanti punti di vista sulla scelta della barca e sulla sua gestione, nella prospettiva di navigare nei nostri mari.
