5.0 out of 5 stars Truly encouraging
This book was recommended to me by my pastor and it was truly a blessing. The concepts and view point from which Spurgeon writes from are truly encouraging as someone who has experienced depression. This book was comforting and gave me strength to keep hoping in the Lord and to reject the guilt that sometimes comes with dealing with mental health challenges. His point about how God does not despise the small things including little faith was a blessing to me. I recommend for those dealing with depression and for those who don’t to be able to have greater understanding and empathy for those who do. And just great concepts in general to grow on the Christian faith.
5.0 out of 5 stars You are not alone
Personal experience is required here I am bi-polar and suffer from devastating and crippling depression. Even though this will not take away your suffering, it will give you comfort in knowing that you are not alone. The book shows me that I’m not a bad person for this and that my insecurities and fears will pass away when I come thru the other side. I think that you will find hope in this book
5.0 out of 5 stars Encouragement for the DISCOURAGED
You might see this title and not pick up this book because you think “I’m not depressed”, or may not want to admit you are. But I think this can be titled Encouragement for the Discouraged. I read this because of my great discouragement. The valleys, no compassion or understanding, people around me seem to have an easy breezy walk. I’ve heard so many times, “as a Christian you shouldn’t be depressed”.This book is for those faint in heart that need a word of encouragement, that have “tired hands and weak knees” (Isaiah 35:3) This book lifted me up so much. There’s something about modern books that just doesn’t seem to do it for me. There’s hardly any people with such grace and empathy in the church. Such willing to cry with those that cry. This is short and straight to the point. Spurgeon had the wisdom AND grace to sustain the weary with a word. (Isaiah 50:4)Please pick up this book if you are feeling any sort of discouragement in your walk. If you feel alone. If you’re in a valley, even if you’re not! If you are a mother or a Christian concerned about the weight in your soul. You won’t be disappointed. The language has been slightly updated. It says they wanted to preserve the original writing as much as they could, but for someone like me who reads very slow, this was very easy to understand and I was able to finish it in 3 days reading about 15min morning and night. If you are looking for other books on similar topic I recommend “Christians get depressed too” by David Murray. It’s also a pocket sized booklet but very helpful.
5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book with a wonderful message
A beautiful book, very high quality, a short read. Would make a very nice gift. Well worded, clear and concise. I purchased several to use them as gifts. A great value!
4.0 out of 5 stars Hope for the Hurting
He was the greatest preacher of the nineteenth century. And he is only of the most important preachers in the history of the church. Heralded as the Prince of Preachers, this man was also afflicted with a host of physical ailments for most of his adult life. He was also a victim of depression. His name - Charles Haddon Spurgeon.Encouragement for the Depressed by C.H. Spurgeon is one of the recent titles in Crossway’s Short Classics series. Designed to preserve classic texts from some of the most well-known Christian writers, the series also aims to gain some new readers.Spurgeon’s essay is an exposition of Zechariah 4:10a, which says, “For whoever has despised the day of small things …” The work is divided into two distinct parts.Encouragement for the DepressedThe first part sets out to encourage Christians who battle depression. Spurgeon, as noted above, fought depression throughout his life. Yet, he is quick to remind his readers to refuse to be governed by feelings. “He that lives by feelings,” writes the preacher from London, “will be happy today and unhappy tomorrow; and if our salvation depended upon our feelings, we should be lost one day and saved another, for they are all as fickle as the weather, and go up and down like a barometer.”Spurgeon assures the despondent that God is with them. “Satan trembles when he sees the weakest saint upon his knees, “ writes William Cowper. Indeed, the grace of God abounds when the people of God are drowning in sorrow. And Zechariah affirms, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, says the LORD.”The Minister’s Fainting FitsPart two speaks candidly about the propensity for depression, even among God’s people. Spurgeon specifically notes that pastors fall prey to this vicious monster. Always the realist and biblicist, Spurgeon says, “Glory be to God for the furnace, the hammer and the file.”Encouragement for the Depressed is a powerful antidote. This short book is a call to arms for Christians who battle despondency. There are no therapeutics here. Spurgeon only offers the cure which is nothing less than the Lord Jesus Christ and his gospel.
5.0 out of 5 stars Short but helpful
This little book packs a lot in a few pages. Spurgeon offers hope and encouragement to two primary groups of people in this short study: those who are discouraged by the weakness of their faith and those who are wearied by the demands of Christian ministry. His words are encouraging to a weary or discouraged heart and filled with Scripture. Spurgeon himself suffered from depression and discouragement and so was able to speak pointedly to these matters. This short book is one I will return to on occasion to be encouraged. The Crossway Short Classics edition is well-laid out and excellently formatted.
