Every believer should read this book. Wilkin goes into detail on building biblical literacy and it's importance while still managing to keep the book an easy read. Wether you've been walking with the Lord 20 days or 20 years, this book has been so valuable in my time in the world.

Women of the Word is the first of Jen Wilkin's books that I read and I have to say, it has revolutionized how I look at the Word of God. In Women of the Word, Jen clearly and succinctly explains why all Christians (not just pastors and teachers) should study the Word of God. On page 45 she writes,"Both false teachers and secular humanist rely on biblical ignorance for their messages to take root, and the modern church has proven fertile ground for those messages."I could not agree more! She goes on to explain how to go about studying the Word in a way that is effective and practical. Wilkin teaches how to study God's Word with purpose, perspective, patience, process, and prayer. She gives a detailed description (including pictures!) of how she writes and marks so that the reader has a good understanding of it. I also LOVE the fact that Jen doesn't claim that everyone in the church is a teacher. She reminds readers that teachers will be held to a higher standard (James 3:1) and that we need to ensure that we are making disciples of the Word not fans of the teacher.Overall, I would give Women of the Word by Jen Wilkin a solid A+. I think that every women's Bible study group should read through this book before anything else to ensure that they really are learning the Word with their hearts and minds equally. I also think that this book would be a great resource for a spiritually young believer. I wouldn't recommend it for a brand new believer but someone that is ready to learn and grow on their own could greatly benefit from this methodology

This is an outstanding book. I've read it at least three or four times, and I've taught through it in small groups twice. It's a valuable, accessible resource for anyone who is seeking to study the Bible more carefully and grow in Biblical literacy. I appreciate Jen Wilkin's straightforward approach as she outlines key reasons and practical tools for Bible literacy. It has helped me grow and handle the Bible more effectively as a student and as a teacher. I have used Jen's methods for studying multiple books of the Bible now and have found her suggestions valuable in handling the Word of God for myself. This book is easy to read and simple enough to start implementing right away. I appreciate that the updated edition has discussion questions included, which makes facilitating a small group easier than it was the first time around! I highly recommend this book to any individual or group wanting to grow in Bible literacy with the focus of knowing and loving God more.

I'm learning to accept books written by women. A women myself, and someone searching for the deep truths of Scripture, I have noticed without trying to be skeptical, that I was tired of hearing the same "women-like" narrative in bible studies and topical books written by women. I didn't know how I wanted to be address as a woman seeking Christ but I knew what I didn't want. This is the first book I've read by a woman instructing other women and may I say, I knew by the first chapter(it was actually sooner than that) that this book was different. I thought early on that maybe Jen should have picked a different title but having finished the book, it truly captures what she is trying to teach.I want to write more about the book, but I think I would just mess it up. I'm thankful for this book and how it has shown me to appreciate and value more women teaching other women. I'm also very thankful for the specific instruction in how to study Scripture methodically. I had started studying this way several years ago but it was only as a means to help me dig and remember more of what I was reading. So the specific instruction has helped give me more structure.Again, so much more to say, but lastly I appreciate the teaching chapter. It has helped me see how I would go about teaching Scripture to other woman. The pitfalls were helpful as well pointing out the very things that I sensed in previous books by women but couldn't explain. Things I didn't want apart of my study of Scripture. This book was a healthy model of what it is to be a "woman of the word".

This is a very practical and comprehensive book about how to study the Bible and become more intimate with God during the process. This book is full of wisdom and most definitely worth the time to read.Jen Wilkin rightly encourages Bible readers to read scriptures fully in context on one's own initially--before reading other commentators' notes. Jen Wilkin precisely explains how to study through scripture like a seminary student in a step-by-step practical process; she even includes a visual example.People who do not consider themselves very organized and/or not the best students in general will definitely benefit from reading this short, insightful, helpful book. Even those of us who are already familiar with practical study skills that most successful students exercise in high school and university can benefit from reading Jen Wilkin's book as it exudes with passion to teach people not be be scared of reading and coming to a right understanding of God's holy word without entirely depending upon what the professionals say. Jen Wilkin inspires everyone to delve more intentionally into God's truth to know His word and Him intimately.There are colleges that charge expensive fees to teach people general good study skills that Jen Wilkin teaches in this book! I recommend this book for men to read as well!I only wish this book's title was more inclusive: People of the Word.

Klasse!Das Buch kann man allein lesen oder auch als Gruppe durcharbeiten.Auch die Kürze fällt positiv auf!

Jen Wilkens beautifully illustrates a methodolgy of how to read scripture, in a meaningful and deeper way. The way she incorporates her own experience, and explains each piece of how and why to read God's word is thoughtfully laid out, and easy to grasp.Albeit a short book, it is VERY meaty. If you are a truth seeker, or someone struggling with how to get to know God, or simply would like to read scripture in a more meaningful way, this book is a must read!
