5.0 out of 5 stars Thought-provoking and quote-worthy
Living Life Backwards is a wonderful expositional commentary on a somewhat difficult book of the Bible. The author is a gifted wordsmith. He makes Ecclesiastes come alive. He provides the reader with a clear lens to view the meaning and direction of the Preacher regarding living life from the perspective of dying, aging, relationships, possessions, eternity with or without God. Most every page is thought-provoking and quote-worthy. I found it to be an insightful, inspiring, informational, humbling, and convicting book. It is one I will keep and reread often. Excellent! A Five-star book.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great book about the book of Ecclesiastes
This is one of my favorite books of the year so far! It’s really a lovely commentary on the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible. It’s very insightful, but readable. I feel the author is faithful to God‘s word. It has motivated me to want to read other books about the book of Ecclesiastes and mostly to just read the book of Ecclesiastes itself. Very motivating!
5.0 out of 5 stars Worthy, not worthless, words
Super enlightening, never undermining God's hand in all things
5.0 out of 5 stars Clever and Educational Text
I was referred this book by my minister. It is short and to the point. You will enjoy how it takes Ecclesiastes apart one chapter at a time. The themes of the Bible Book are easily identified and much easier to understand than a cold reading of this book. Understanding the wisdom of this book leads the reader to seeking and noticing anew those things God puts before us every day in every way. Much like the teachings inside the topics of Fruit of the Spirit, this is a lovely book that seeks to bring us closer to God. The big difference is how this text reminds us or makes us aware that the world has a lot more to it than meets the initial eye.
4.0 out of 5 stars Live in the now, with your focus on the finish line
This is an insightful and engaging examination of Ecclesiastes, a book that points at the irony and futility inherent in the fallen human condition. This thoughtful commentary brings home the message of the preacher: life in this world is brief and unpredictable. We live potentially only a moment away from death, and then we have eternity. What then? Are we prepared to face God, or are we living in denial. The sooner we find peace with God through Jesus Christ and make a decision to try and live a life that is pleasing to God, the better. And as the scripture tells us, that whole duty of man is encapsulated in the words “Fear God and keep his commandments” (ch. 12:13).The message of Ecclesiastes is so contrary to the modern worldview, its revelations are counter-intuitive. The author does an excellent job of exploring its wisdom. Like me, you will find yourself keeping this slim and accessible volume on your bookshelf to dip into again.
5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful and life changing
Worthing reading twice and sharing. I bought Pastor Gibson’s Radically Whole: Gospel Healing for Divided Heart from the Book of James after completing this book.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great read
My bible study group loves this book. It's a detailed read on keeping death in mind and to keep your posture on Heaven as we live life here on earth.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great little book
What a great little book. By simply putting the entire of Ecclesiastes into context, Pastor Gibson removes the initial feelings that Solomon was only writing about his despair and failures. Yet he still deals with the details of the book as well. This book will help the reader focus on the wisdom of Solomon as well as benefit form Solomon's failures, so that we need not make all those same mistakes ourselves. Gibson draws out a very high view of God, as well as His immeasurable love for his children, living in this fallen world. I cannot recommend this book too highly. All readers will benefit from reading and contemplating Solomon's wisdom as highlighted in Gibson's book. You surely don't have to be a Bible scholar to benefit from this book.
Why are parts of ECC not discussed?
Why aren't certain parts of the book covered in his book, "Living Life Backwards"?Most of Ch 5 is missing, all of 6, all of 8 and all of 10...is there a reason for this?
Easy to read and comprehend
What a great resource! My daughter was recommended it and loved it so now we’ve done it together. Not a mind-bending book, it’s very common language and practical insight, not over theological. The basis of this book is “… only if you prepare to die can you really learn to live”. It’s not depressing, it’s life-giving.I’ve already bought his book on James to do next!
The Best Book You Will Read on Ecclesiastes
Having read several other books and commentaries on Ecclesiastes, I can say that David has written the best book on Ecclesiastes you will find. This book is helpful as a commentary, if you are working through the book. However, you will also find that it is an excellent book for personal devotions or personal study of the Ecclesiastes. It is well written and will open up this often avoided book of the Bible in a way that will give you a new love for it.
Ecclesiastes finally ministers to me
I have read Ecclesiastes many times, and I've heard many sermons on it, but this book finally helped me understand the message of the book. It doesn’t read like a commentary at all, though. It delivers the message of Ecclesiastes so clearly and persuasively that you forget that the book is at its heart an exposition of the Bible. Many of Gibson's phrases will live me (e.g. life is gift not gain) and help me to remember the truths of Ecclesiastes. I want more books like this one!
Vital, Important, Timely
"How should we then live?" is one of life's most important questions. What difference does our believing (or not believing) make to our living? Ecclesiastes might not be the first book of the Bible where we might seek the answer. At first reading it appears a gloomy, melancholic meditation on life. But how wrong that is.David Gibson's wonderful, clear exposition is really helpful in revealing the depth and scope of 'the preacher's' wisdom. Life in God's world is gift not gain. When we realise that we cannot control our lives, either in length or significance, then we are freed to acknowledge God's gift of life and enjoy it with thankfulness. This is life lived under grace.Although published in 2017, this book could not be more relevant for the pandemic world of 2020. Western society does not discuss the meaning of death, even now, because secularism and atheism offers no hope. But the preacher, the questor after truth, in Ecclesiastes has much to say to a world forced to face its own imminent mortality. This book seems expensive for a relatively slim volume. It's price may even restrict its readership which would be a shame. But I would still encourage you to buy it, read it and reflect on it. It's value is almost priceless!
