5.0 out of 5 stars Who doesn't enjoy learning about ancient history
Who doesn't enjoy learning about ancient history? The era of Spartans is one that many find interesting, me included, and I was delighted to find that this book does a Fantastic job at portraying and narrating the facts about that moment in time. This isn't just a basic history book, the author does a great job keeping the reader entertained with a unique writing style. He goes in depth explaining this paramount event and the tactics used. It's crazy how crafty those ancient civilizations really were once you read about them, but it's usually difficult for authors to make it entertaining enough for someone to read on the subject. Alan did a superb job making this piece not only enjoyable, but very informative.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good, fast and easy read....
I'm giving it 4 instead of 5 stars because I can't help but compare it to Steven Pressfield's epic "Gates of Fire", the novel on the same subject. It may not be a fair comparison, but life itself isn't fair, is it? However, this is a worthy and entertaining read with lots of action and descriptions of the horrific battle of Thermopylae. It's an easy, fast read and the Kindle price is right at $2.99. It's free if you subscribe to Kindle Unlimited, which I don't.If you're like me and can't get enough on the subject of the Battle of Thermopylae and the 300 Spartans, then put "Gates of Fire" as well as this book on your 'must read' list. Once you've read them, you'll come to see what a silly and inaccurate cartoon of a Hollywood movie "300" was and while both of these books are fiction, you'll have a much better idea of what really went down on the narrow pass of the Hot Gates in 480 B.C.
5.0 out of 5 stars "Phalanx, ATTACK!"
Expertly described by Alan Bristor in "An Account of Thermopylae: Leonidas the Spartan King," the ancient Greek military tactic known as the Phalanx achieved legendary status that remains overwhelmingly awesome even today, nearly 2,500 years later.Breathtakingly brought to life in his brilliant presentation of events at Thermopylae, Bristor notes, "The Greek fighting force had become a precision machine." Narrated from the first-person point of view in the voice of legendary King Leonidas of Sparta, we are treated to an elegantly orchestrated battle literally step by step as the heroic warriors assemble in their ranks and form the invincible precision machine called "Phalanx."In extraordinary detail and yet never difficult to follow, the reader is guided through the process of training in the Spartan phalanx commands and their correct execution as the non-Spartan soldiers from various Greek city-states are taught the steps by their Spartan brothers-in-arms.With Bristor's clear presentation of the battle's events, readers see not only the overwhelming odds faced by the vastly out numbered coalition of soldiers holding the narrow pass against the massive Persian force, but also witness the spine-tingling birth of Nationalism as soldiers of individual city-states solidify into Unified Soldiers of Greece."An Account of Thermopylae: Leonidas the Spartan King" by Alan Bristor occupies a well-deserved place as a 5-star supplement to the epic history of Thermopylae. I highly recommend this book to students of Classical studies, fans of ancient Greek history, lovers of Spartan lore, and modern-day soldiers who want to experience the brotherhood of warriors fighting one of the earliest wars for the freedoms we inherited with the birth of Western Civilization.
5.0 out of 5 stars Moving Account
Of course it is not possible to know the words and actions from a battle with no survivors, but this account fits the fighting styles the Greeks likely used. It easily allowed me to feel the history.
5.0 out of 5 stars Unique and Interesting
As a reader of Ancient Greek history I was very delightfully surprised by the unique and original way the story of Thermopylae war from the perspective of Leonidas was presented in this book. Very original while still being historically correct. The book and storyline was interesting and kept me engaged. I definitely recommend reading this book. .
5.0 out of 5 stars Leonidas, King of Sparta
I chose 5 stars because this is a fresh account, for me, of the Greek forces's Philotimo at Thermopalaye. This story is told in the first person by King Leonidas. Well worth reading.
4.0 out of 5 stars Overall a good read.
Historically it flows well with what is known as fact, but there are a couple areas that I'm still unsure about. Overall a good read.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book
This is the authors interpretation of the known facts, and it was great. I really enjoyed this book. Didn't take long to read it either. Must read if you like Spartan history.
