Turn Right, Good Moon: Conversations with a Dying Mother

Description:

Have you ever wished it could be in your own home? In a familiar environment, surrounded by loved ones? On your own terms and in your own time? You’re not alone. You may have wondered what families who support a person dying at home actually go through: the logistics, the process, and the unexplored emotional landscape. How do people enter into the world of the dying? Turn Right, Good Moon is a book about that world. It is the story of a woman who wanted to die at home and of the family who helped her fulfill her wish. Turn Right, Good Moon brings a unique perspective to a subject we approach with reluctance – a perspective of hope. The book can be read as a simple yet beautiful parable, as an almanac of hope, or as a practical guide for ordinary families who want to support a dying person. For those familiar with the world of the dying, Good Moon’s story is a refreshing perspective on the joys, sorrows and challenges of supporting a loved one who has chosen to die on her own terms. For those unfamiliar with that world, Turn Right, Good Moon is a compelling invitation. It asks us to welcome Death into our homes and our families, to accept its strange and powerful blessings, and to renew our understanding of what it means to live.

About the Author

Leslie E. Moore is a storyteller, writer and teacher. She was raised in Northern Minnesota, just south of the Canadian border. The eldest of seven children, she grew up on the Iron Range, close to the world s largest open pit mine for ore. Her earliest memories are of pines, icy lakes, blizzards and endless sky a somber palette of dark green, tawny brown, grey, blue and white. After studying English at St Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, Leslie completed her Ph.D. in English at Yale University and joined the Yale faculty as an Assistant and then Associate Professor of English. At Yale, she taught 17th and 18th century British literature, co-directed the University s writing programs, and wrote a book on Milton, Beautiful Sublime: The Making of Paradise Lost, 1701-1734. A change of career saw her complete a J.D. at Yale Law School and move to New York, where she practiced law with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. In 2001, she moved to Sydney, Australia, to become Regional Legal Counsel for Deloitte Consulting in Asia Pacific, before moving into the role of General Counsel for Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu in Australia. In September 2012, she took a leave of absence from the practice of law to work full time on Turn Right, Good Moon and to complete a novel, Shooting Cellos. Leslie and her daughter have made their home in Sydney, Australia.
