Leaving Laodicea: How to Find the Wisdom You Need to Survive the Days Ahead

Description:

Almost every day we are bombarded with another story of racial or political tension that is tearing at the very fabric of our nation. The constant fear of terrorism lingers in the back of the minds of many today. There's the threat of another financial crisis that looms just over the horizon. Corruption in our sacred institutions is almost epidemic. There's little trust in the principles that our nation was founded upon: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Instead, every man does what is right in his own eyes (Judges 21:25) with little thought of how it impacts others.

Are you prepared spiritually to face the troubling times ahead? Do you have the wisdom necessary to navigate the turbulent waters rushing toward our nation, culture, family, and the church? Do you know where to find God’s wisdom? And, if so, do you know how to appropriate His wisdom into your life?

Leaving Laodicea is a twenty-one day journey designed to help you dive deep into the book of Proverbs to discover true wisdom, and then show you how to get wisdom, and in all your getting, get understanding (Proverbs 4:7).

I always appreciate books that feature the Bible, and this one is loaded. Each day (the book is structured as a 21-day study) is an in-depth look at a particular scripture text, often with an emphasis on helping us better understand the key words in the original language. Slowing down and considering texts of scripture in detail was welcome and helpful.A few of my favorite quotes: "An anemic, Children's Church Jesus will not be enough for you to survive what is soon to take place in our land of Laodicea. A preschool, flannel graph faith will not sustain you when the clouds of judgment begin to swirl. You need more. We all need more." (pg xii). "Wisdom is not the mere accumulation of facts about someone or something. It is the ability to properly apply those facts in a given situation to determine the right and God-honoring outcome." (pg 29). "If we desire more wisdom from the Father (James 1:5), He answers by revealing more of His Son." (pg 37). "Which fool are you? Are you a fool in the eyes of the world for believing in the cross of Christ, or are you a fool in the eyes of Scripture who rejects the truths of God? The consequences of your choice are eternal. So choose wisely." (pg 118). "All of us are equally in need of forgiveness and grace at the foot of the cross. We are simply one hopeless beggar telling another beggar where we found bread." (p 137).One warning: prepare to be challenged by tough, direct questions. Over and over, I was confronted with a question about some part of my life, with this follow-up, "What are you prepared to do about it?" (pg 82, for instance). It was good for me, and I'm sure you will find that it is good for you too.I heartily recommend the book. Happy reading!

Steve McCranie presents Leaving Laodicea as a 21 Day Devotional. What it is, is a 21 day exhortation to whole living in Christ; not simply as a believer or as a fan of Jesus, but a life that is modeled after the Life of the Master Himself. This book is written for those who hunger to subject their lives to Christ’s pattern fully and who thirst to more fully understand at the deepest level the wisdom found in Him. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It took me considerably more than “21 days” to digest this book because I kept going back to the parts where I thought, “did he really say that?” I recommend this book only to those who are willing to walk a hard, disciplined road in the footsteps of Jesus.Michael GanttPastor, Blogger, MissionaryBrattleboro, Vermont

Blessing, convicting, encouraging, challenging....those are just some of the words that come to mind in describing my experience walking through Leaving Laodicea for the past 21 days. I literally felt the passage from Romans 12 come to life that tell us to be "transformed by the renewing of your mind" as Steve used the Proverbs and other important Scriptures to help clarify God's position on important subjects that are on the forefront of today's culturally accepted "norm". Steve doesn't mess around with a watered down message that itches ears, but he delivers truth in a loving way without compromise - something I have always appreciated about his teaching. An important and engaging book that every believer needs to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great 21-day devotional on Wisdom (and so much more!)

If you are looking for something to read for 5 minutes each day before you run out the door to work, this is not it. Although, if you are serious about growing in your knowledge of the Scriptures and desiring the wisdom that can only come from God, this is your book! I thoroughly enjoyed the guidance as Steve walks you through Scripture, challenging you and teaching you how to really study the verses you are reading. He also includes daily questions that cause you to reflect your own heart, life, and commitment to God. It was very enlightening and definitely challenged me to grow - I plan to go through it again as a small group study!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Hearty Devotional Tool for Engaging the Bible's Pithy Sayings

This helpful book deviates from the devotional norm in that it doesn't skip around Scripture providing light-hearted encouragement that comes with a hearty pat on the back. If that's what you're looking for, Leaving Laodicea is not the book for you. However, if you're seeking a solid devotional tool that will guide you through an in-dept, expositional treatment of Scripture, you'll appreciate McCranie's 21-day journey through the first chapter of the book of Proverbs.Filled with verse-by-verse commentary, Hebrew word studies, and questions for reflection and deeper application attached to every chapter, this book is a great gift to the Church as she seeks to avoid the trappings of the lukewarm Laodicea culture (Revelation 3:15-16).

I thoroughly enjoyed this devotional book. I love being able to spend time with the Lord in the morning, and how this book I believe will grow your walk with Him. Each day after reading you will have questions to answer and they are really important because they really get you not only learning about God and what He says, but also yourself and where your at spiritually. I learned things that were encouraging and that I had read over in the past but Steve's writing had me see them in a new way. Great book to buy!

Steve is a good friend and a great author! His insightful, probing questions challenge one's thinking and promote a closer, more intimate walk with the LORD. Excellent word studies communicated in such a way that the text isn't over people's heads and hits where we live. Great for reading through or for taking more time to delve into a deeper study. Definitely worth one's time!
