Clinker Plywood Boatbuilding Manual

Description:

Iain Oughtred is the well-known designer of elegant glued-lapstrake plywood boats, including the Acorn Skiffs, Gray Seal, Caledonia Yawl, Whilly Boat, and more. We have been offering his detailed boatbuilding plans for years, so the book was a natural fit. And, you may have noticed many of his designs in WoodenBoat magazine's Launchings column. With the book in hand, and a set of his plans, you can hardly go wrong. Clinker Plywood Boatbuilding Manual is encompassing enough to guide you through any lapstrake (aka Clinker) boatbuilding project. It covers tools and materials needed, lining off, setting up the building jig, planking, interior work, and fitting out. There are hundreds of drawings, hundreds of photos, and it's dosed liberally with Iain's pragmatic experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Lapstrake Boatbuilders

C. · February 9, 2018

Rarely do I buy a book and get through it in two days. We just finished building a plywood lapstrake boat and Oughtred's manual would have been an excellent resource. I would definitely recommend it to anyone considering building a clinker (lapstrake) boat.CheersKentSmall Boat Restoration

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Addition to Small Boat Library

M. · September 5, 2006

This book is a great cross reference to the Hill and Rossel books. Oughred relies on his photographs to convey the boat construction message and the result is a clear instruction manual. Boatbuilding can be confusing to the uninitiated, and Oughred's approach supplements the more detailed written accounts offered in "How to Build Glued-Lapstrake Wooden Boats" by Brooks and Hill and "Building Small Boats" by Rossel in a way that complements these other fine books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent

J.T. · July 17, 2013

This book reads more like a manual than a narrative description (as you find in Hill's book). It follows a boat build in order, but frequently describes alternative methods of doing certain tasks. Excellent illustrations and photos make it clear. A little more advanced than the Hill book (Ultralight Boatbuilding).

5.0 out of 5 stars Understanding clinker boatbuilding

This book is excellent!!! For years I had always wondered about how lapstrake (clinker) boats were built. Ian does a wonderfull job of explaining all the details. The book is clearly illustrated and should answer all your questions. Also, his designs are well worth looking into. Buy it and enjoy.

I found this book to have a few good tips, but certainly not a great guide for new builder trying to learn basic techniques .

A book filled with knowledge gained from experience. It will be a valuable aid when I start building a boat.

This is beautifully written, well illustrated and full of great material. It's exactly what I was looking for. I can't wait to put the knowhow in this book to work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Boats. Cool.

Makes me want to live a more adventurous life. Makes me want to build boats. Makes me want to live where boats can be used.

Libro fatto molto bene con molte illusttrazioni

G. · March 23, 2022

Ottimo acquisto.

Clear and precise

Very well written.

Step by step guide

b. · January 24, 2018

Very useful even for building boats not only by the glued lap method but also by other methods of plywood construction, because a lot of the outfitting of a hull is similar once the skin is constructed. This includes gunwales, seats, decks, bulkheads, and sometimes spars. For the folks who want to avoid using epoxy, there are alternatives given. Good photos and drawings illustrate most of the steps. I especially like the info on spar sizing for sailing rigs.

Boat sailor, repairer or armchairer, this is the book..

Ian Oughtred has managed to condense a huge amount of directly practical information between the covers of his book. Something to learn and/or consider on every page. Having skimmed through the book initially, I'm finding that I'm back between the pages frequently....Mast tapers, what's the mast taper ratios?... Oh Ian covers that in his book. Could do with a few ideas for cordage tidy, thumb cleats etc.....Ian has that. Tillers, travellers, sheet leads...he has that as well, and loads more. Ian Oughtred is a highly respected boat designer, builder and sailor. I already knew of his boat designs and had great respect for his work .After reading this book, my respect for him has grown due to a better understanding of the man, his passion, skill and expertise. See if you agree. You won't regret the purchase.

Ian Oughtred's way to build his stunningly beautiful boats. Buy one of his plans, read this book (you will do so many times over) and with a bit of skill and patience, you will be the proud owner of a modern classic. Step by step instructions with lots of b/w photos to build everything between stem and stern (and those included) inside and out of a small, lightweight, modern boat.He even considers "green" plywood; thumbs up !!!
