RON SANTO DOES A GREAT JOB ON THIS MUST READ FOR ALL CUB FANS YOUNG AND OLD. HE TELL US OF HIS CAREER IN BASEBALL AND A BIT OF HIS LIFE OFF THE FIELD. I FEEL THE TWO HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS WELL WRITTEN BOOK ARE THE EVENTS OF THE 1969 SEASON OF WHICH THE CUBS BLEW A HUGE LEAD AND LOST THEIR DIVISION TO THE MIRACLE METS. THE OTHER IS HIS BATTLE WITH DIABETES. RON HAS SOME GREAT BASEBALL STORIES AND AFTER I COMPLETED THIS I HAVE A GREATER RESPECT FOR RON AND HIS ORDEAL WITH THIS DISEASE. WHY THIS MAN IS NOT IN THE HALL OF FAME IS TOTALLY RIDICULOUS. HE WAS A GREAT FIELDER, HITTER AND GAVE HIS ALL. HE IS TOTAL CLASS AND SO IS THIS MUST READ STORY.

4.0 out of 5 stars Life story from a man who should be in the hall of fame!

C.M.B. · April 7, 2009

I purchased this book to help write a in depth paper about the life of Ron Santo and it certainly helped me do just that. The only issue I have with the book is the scatteredness style in which it is presented. The last chapter is Santo's feelings about some of the great players that he played with. Truth be told there probably is no happy complete way to end a story about a man who lives and dies Cubbie blue, but I think the author could have ended with Santo's hopes, dreams, and goals as he winds down his career as a broadcaster for the Cubs. Santo is a five star athlete and a five star man, but this is only a four star presentation of his life story

5.0 out of 5 stars Baseball at its finest.

Ron Santo played professional baseball despite having type one diabetes. His stories about his teammates and coaches are an insight to how the game was in the 1950s and 1960s. Ron tells it like he saw it. I recommend this book to any baseball fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ron Santo is Chicago baseball

J. · March 4, 2005

The greatest third baseman ever to play the game and the fact that a trousersnake like Joe Morgan is helping to keep him out of the HOF is a crying shame. Ron Santo is what courage is all about and an inspiration to anyone on this big colored ball we call earth. I first became a fan of Ronnie's in 1998 because I would listen to all of the Cubs games on the radio with him and VPatrick Hughes. I had a job selling tickets at this and didn't have a tele to watch Chip and Stone on the TV. Anyway Santo is the best. The Cubs should have retired his number long ago. Long live Ron Santo and the Cubs...two winners!Origianlly posted 5/4/04CC

3.0 out of 5 stars Very few ballplayer autobiographies satisfy - this one, too.

r. · February 9, 1999

I love Ron Santo...and although I have a phobia of ballplayer autobiographies, I figured out of respect for the man, and because I thought maybe, just maybe, this one would break the mold of politically correct, sacchrine-sweet memiors typically put out there from the jock-ocracy. I have more respect for him than ever, especially when he chronicles his struggles with diabetes, and the self-diagnosis he must go through every day to monitor his health. This is a must read for Cubs fans, and for people who need another story of a courageous battle against diabetes. Most other target audiences will probably choose to pass on this.
