Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Sports Afield dates back to 1887, and while this book spans the 20th century, most of the 50 stories included are from the second half. Nonetheless, the selection is wide and varied and features such writers as Thomas McGuane, Red Smith, Jim Harrison, and even humorist P.J. O'Rourke. The stories are arranged chronologically in one of three categories: hunting, fishing, or adventure. On one level, the stories report on hunting for lions, cape buffalo, elephants, ducks, and deer; fishing for trout, bass, and bonefish; and adventures with bears, cobras, and crocodiles. But the underlying theme is the joy and challenge of nature and the thoughts and inner lives of outdoorspeople. Libraries who subscribe to Sports Afield will want this.?John M.
