Robert De Niro, Sr.: Paintings, Drawings, and Writings: 1942-1993

Description:

This long-overdue monograph rediscovers the fifty-year career of Robert De Niro, Sr., an important New York School painter and poet.

The first comprehensive monograph on painter and poet Robert De Niro, Sr. (1922-1993), a major contributor to postwar American art, known for his unique, bold style of painterly representation. De Niro was a visionary artist in the early days of Abstract Expressionism and a celebrated member of the New York School of painters, along with Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, and Jackson Pollock.

Over the course of his fifty-year career, he painted portraits, still lifes, the female nude, and interiors with a signature gestural painting style and brilliant color, which bear the influence of Henri Matisse as well as his teacher, Hans Hofmann. During the height of Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art in the 1960s, De Niro remained faithful to his own vision in his paintings and poetry; today his powerful figural works are ripe for rediscovery.

This lavishly illustrated book brings together De Niro's paintings, prints, and drawings as well as a never-
before-published selection of his writings and poetry. Featuring essays by noted scholars and an illustrated biography including many unpublished photographs and ephemera, this seminal volume explores the depth and breadth of De Niro's oeuvre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finding the image

Nice book, the layout with images full page with facing page title and information only places the focus on the work. Seeing the works here it is clear that finding the image, that process, was the point of making the art.

5.0 out of 5 stars Long Overdue Monograph on a Remarkable Artist

This is a long overdue monograph on the remarkable artist, Robert de Niro, Sr. The book covers this multi-faceted artist who was also a poet and a well-read man on history of art. The reproductions are exquisite with amazingly vibrant colors. Every aspect of his artistic output has been explored - drawings, painting and writing. My only gripe is why not more of everything? There are not enough paintings included here for a man who had a very long career that lasted over 50 years. Also, selections from his voluminous journals are down to a few entries. His son, Robert de Niro, Jr. can certainly see to it that they get published in a separate volume. And while you’re at it why not release the DVD of the documentary that was made of his father’s life. If not now, then when? The book is worth having if you appreciate an artist who was a master colorist. I highly recommend this book.

Really the only monograph currently available on him, Robert De Niro Sr. though not in the forefront of American Modernist painting, was certainly an artist of note who moved in important artistic circles and produced a fine body of work; influenced by French painting (notably Matisse) and Hans Hofmann (whose classes he attended) his work was figurative with some influence from his contemporaries in Abstract Expressionism.De Niro Sr. was part of an American art movement that is only now becoming appreciated – a parallel development to the abstractionists producing expressive paintings without the hype and promotion the New York Abstract Expressionists received. The book is very nicely produced; a lavishly illustrated hardback, it has many large full-colour plates of mainly oils, a few drawings and pastels; the texts are informative and De Niro`s poems and other writings are also represented. As a reference and introduction to his work it's as fine a volume as one could ask for.
