“This fast-paced read has everything you could want in a thriller: secret identities, a mysterious boss and a cat & mouse game that kept me guessing the whole way through.” —Reese Witherspoon

Evie Porter has everything a nice Southern girl could want: a doting boyfriend, a house with a white picket fence, a tight group of friends. The only catch: Evie Porter doesn’t exist.

The identity comes first: Evie Porter. Once she’s given a name and location by her mysterious boss, Mr. Smith, she learns everything there is to know about the town and the people in it. Then the mark: Ryan Sumner. The last piece of the puzzle is the job.

Evie isn’t privy to Mr. Smith’s real identity, but she knows this job isn't like the others. Ryan has gotten under her skin, and she’s starting to envision a different sort of life for herself. But Evie can’t make any mistakes—especially after what happened last time.

Evie Porter must stay one step ahead of her past while making sure there's still a future in front of her. The stakes couldn't be higher—but then, Evie has always liked a challenge. . . .

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is why I love to read!

From the first few pages, I was hooked. The characters are well developed and relatable. The author does an excellent job of keeping the intrigue and weaving several stories together. I’m planning on reading again just to enjoy it in a new light now I know how it ends. This book is why I love to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A real page turner!

A.M. · April 20, 2025

This was a well constructed mystery that really made you want to keep up all night to finish it. A real page turner! It was a different approach to typical mysteries, as the reader never really knows who's telling the truth, and who's lying, and on top of that, who is who they say they are!Sadly for me, there seems to be a trend in these thriller mysteries where there is some sort of computer guru that can do all sorts of things, including installing cameras or listening devices in any house or building, and performing impossible data searches or alterations to various databases. Unfortunately, this book has one too, and because at times the things he does are so impossible, it takes away from the quality of the writing and some of the mystery. My other "complaint" is that there are so many flashbacks to different time periods and different "jobs" and locations, that it is a little difficult to keep up with all of the people, names, dates and places. Then add to that that the main character is constantly changing her name, it's difficult to keep it all together. In the end, it all ties together, but I did find it as a stumbling block to a nice cohesive read.

5.0 out of 5 stars fast paced adventure!

S.B. · June 21, 2025

Great book! Face paced with twists and turns. It’s fun all the to the end! Would be a great movie too!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not book-club worthy

A. · May 26, 2025

The novel is juvenile and silly but I gave it three stars because it absolutely held my attention from start to finish.

4.0 out of 5 stars 🫶🏻

J.B. · June 15, 2025

The First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston was my first read by this author, and I absolutely loved it. I can't wait for her next book to be released in 2026. I thoroughly enjoyed the protagonist's portrayal as a strong, bad a@@ female. I thought I knew who Mr. Smith was, but boy, was I wrong multiple times. Elston did a wonderful job of tying everything together and not leaving anything unanswered.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!

This book was amazing! It kept me reading. There are so many twists! I would highly recommend this book to everyone!

4.0 out of 5 stars Basic, But Fun Ending

E.M. · May 2, 2025

This was somewhat entertaining. It grabbed me in the beginning, but the middle was a slog. It seemed very obviously pushing the reader to assume one person as Mr. Smith, so I was hoping that it would be wrong, otherwise it would've been a letdown at the end. I kept reading because of all the good reviews and it does pick up in the 3rd act to the end. I was satisified with the ending (not going to spoil the fun). If you're stuck in the messy middle and bored with it, I can say it's worth it to push through. Overall, it is underwhelming compared to the reviews and the writing style is very basic.

Captivating thriller and mystery

And I’m impressed with the plot twist …. Evie Porter is something else lol

Unexpected

R.P. · April 11, 2025

I did not like the main character much but found her interesting enough to continue. The romance parts engage one at the start. The plot really kicks up in the last quarter of the book and some unexpected things occur which was fantastic. I wanted to skim over the flashbacks and get straight to the present which I wanted resolved. But the way it is written makes sense in the end. The writing style was different to the style I am used to, the plot was covered fairly quickly which made each reading session, however short, quite satisfying. It is not a light read as the material is uncomfortable. I think I'll go back to a Jane Austen next. Overall I did enjoy First Lie Wins and would recommend it.

Engaging Story

Couldn’t put it down. A strong protagonist and would want you to keep reading till the end! Go for it.
