5.0 out of 5 stars Critical Thinking Riddle in a Cute Level One Emergent Reader.
Cute story with multiple learning benefits. The cleverly woven story begins by asking the reader if they can solve the riddle of Milly and her rather unusual way of choosing what she likes.Example: "She likes green, but she does not red. She likes seeds, but she does not like flowers."With each detailed, and often comical, new illustration of Milly's likes and dislikes the young reader is drawn further into the story. As I read this story with my 6 year-old niece, Nicole, I too was curious and eager to solve the riddle of Milly's likes and dislikes. As for my niece -well, she was more impressed by the details in all the illustrations; especially the one with Milly in the shower with her umbrella. When we finally discovered the secret to Milly's likes (she like things with double letters), we had a good time going back through the pages and finding all the words with double letters. While Nicole wasn't able to read the entire story all by herself (the text passages are on the more advanced side of the traditional Level One Books), I was extremely pleased to see how Nicole confidence soared, as she correctly identified each of the words double letters; and it nearly brought tears to my eyes when she shouted, "See I CAN read!"I look forward to reading more Silly Milly books....

Great granddaughter loved it. She is just learning to read and the silly things Milly does/likes keeps interest.
5.0 out of 5 stars A fun book for my child to follow along with and WANT to read
Great Book for Kindergarten or Preschool level. The pictures are very engaging and the words are on course for what my child is learning in school.
5.0 out of 5 stars Funny
Funny, cute and entertaining
4.0 out of 5 stars Great addition to any library.
I decided on books for my nieces birthday this year. She just turned 3 and has a love for books. I chose this one because it has a nice little story yet it is a level 1 reader. I have a feeling she will be a early reader and these types of books are just perfect for that. The book is a nice size she can hold it herself while it's being read to or you can grab it and go. It also had very nice pictures
5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book.
Great book for beginner readers. My daughter could read this with help at the beginning of kindergarten and can now read this independently at the end of school.
5.0 out of 5 stars Cute Level 1 reader 😎
This is a cute Level 1 Easy to read book for kids in K/1st grade. I bought this along with a joke book because my 6 year old nephew who was entering 1st grade in the fall, was not wanting to read anything. I showed him the joke book and he said, "I can't wait to read this!" That's made the purchase worthwhile for me! Silly Milly is a interesting book about a woman who likes weird things. You go through the story finding out what she does and doesn’t like. The child can attempt to guess why Milly likes certain things and not others (SPOILER: she only likes words with double letters like the word “letters”). My nephew figured out what the trick was and then we spent a while telling other things she would and wouldn’t like. It’s a great exercise for growing brains. Highly recommend.

A Clever Riddle Game Disguised as a Beginner Reader
"Silly Milly," a Scholastic Reader Level 1 book by Wendy Cheyette Lewison, is a delightful and cleverly crafted story that masterfully engages its young audience with a playful riddle. This book stands out in the crowded field of early readers by transforming the act of reading into an interactive game. The premise is simple yet brilliant: the reader is introduced to the titular character, Miss Milly, who has a peculiar set of preferences. She likes green but not red, butter but not bread, and umbrellas but not showers. With each turn of the page, a new rhyming couplet presents another clue in the pattern of Milly's likes and dislikes. The ultimate challenge for the budding reader is to solve the puzzle of why Milly is so "silly."What makes this book so effective is its subtle educational core. The solution to the riddle lies in a fundamental phonics concept: Milly only likes things that have double letters in their names. This discovery provides a wonderful "aha!" moment for children, encouraging them to look closer at the words themselves, not just the story they tell. The text is perfectly suited for a Level 1 reader, featuring simple sentences, repetitive structures, and a strong rhythmic quality that aids in memorization and fluency.Wendy Cheyette Lewison's writing is crisp and engaging, but the book's charm is equally indebted to the whimsical and energetic illustrations by Nadine Bernard Westcott. The pictures are wacky, colorful, and full of humorous details that will have children poring over the pages. The illustrations not only bring Milly's silly world to life but also provide visual cues that can help young readers decode the text.In summary, "Silly Milly" is more than just a story; it's an interactive literary puzzle. It serves as an excellent tool for parents and educators to encourage close reading and phonemic awareness in a fun, low-pressure way. It's an ideal choice for children who are just beginning to read independently and are ready for a story that offers a rewarding challenge.
