Emotionally Healthy Spirituality: It's Impossible to Be Spiritually Mature, While Remaining Emotionally Immature

Description:

MORE THAN 1 MILLION COPIES SOLD!

A road map for discipleship with Jesus that is powerfully transformative.

Peter Scazzero learned the hard way: you can't be spiritually mature while remaining emotionally immature. Even though he was the pastor of a growing church, he did what most people do--avoid conflict in the name of Christianity; ignore his anger, sadness, and fear; use God to run from God; and live without boundaries.

Eventually God awakened him to a biblical integration of emotional health and the spiritual practice of slowing down and quieting your life for to experience a firsthand relationship with Jesus. It created nothing short of a spiritual revolution in Scazzero, in his church, and now in thousands of other churches.

In this updated edition, Scazzero shares new stories and principles as he outlines his journey and the signs of emotionally unhealthy spirituality. Then he provides seven biblical, reality-tested steps to become emotionally mature:

  • Become your authentic self
  • Break the power of the past
  • Let go of power and control
  • Surrender to your limits
  • Stop to breathe by practicing rest and Sabbath
  • Learn new skills to love well
  • Love Christ above all else

Plus, check out the full line of Emotionally Healthy Spirituality books dedicated to many different key areas of life. Workbooks, study guides, curriculum, and Spanish editions are also available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for Human Beings

T.K. · May 22, 2025

I don't recall my procurement of this book. I don't specifically remember any motivation or recommendation for its purchase. But I saw it in my Kindle library at a perfectly appropriate time in my life when, nearly 3 years into my marriage to an active alcoholic, I was considering divorce. Although the book is not focused on 12 steps or addiction, its focus on the individual believer's role and responsibility to be emotionally healthy and mature is appropriate for all situations, including mine, which certainly isn't unique. The moment I finished the last page, I made the decision to read it again immediately.I highly recommend this book for all persons because almost every scenario imaginable is covered! It's absolutely wonderful!!!

In 2025, this book has become my most recommended, refer to and go to book. I have read it twice and I continue to teach pieces to this in small group. This book has practical, biblical and psychological applications. One of the author’s suggestion is to NOT read this book, but allow the book to read you. This book is designed for radical healing and change. If you are ready to grow up in your Christian Journey, buy 2 books, one for yourself and one for the person you are discipling. It will be worth your wild. THANK God for holy spirit authors who turn us to understanding and healing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent treatment of emotions and spirituality--a must read.

D.J.K. · December 10, 2014

I had not heard of Peter Scazzero's Emotionally Healthy Spirituality (2006) until a few months ago when a pastor friend of mine mentioned it in passing. Since then, when I have shared that I was reading this book, many friends and acquaintances told me how excellent it was. I am not sure why they left me in the dark so long.As a pastor of a church, Scazzero was trying to lead through pure effort with no attention to his emotional life. Only when his relational life began to fray at the edges did he begin to take a closer look at emotion. At the outset of the book, he identified 10 symptoms of emotionally unhealthy spirituality that serve as a useful diagnostic tool.Once we understand our emotional feebleness, Scazzero spends the later half of the book talking about what to do about. He encourages a deeper look inside, acknowledging the reality of emotions as a normal part of the Christian life. I particularly appreciated chapter 6, which dealt with the concept of a dark night of the soul, an issue too frequently ignored in the Christian life. For Scazzero, I think rightly, the dark night is a normative part of the Christian life, though too often, people run from it, rather than toward it, much to their detriment.Near the end of the book, he encourages the practice of two specific disciplines--the daily office and the Sabbath--to grow in our understanding of God and understanding of self. Attention to God and delighting in his creation are essential practices that we too often hurry past.On the whole, I think this is very beneficial book. It is a relatively easy read, but if you read it, take your time and ponder what the author has to say. He writes with lists and bullet points, which many people will find desirable, though don't believe that represents naive ideas that can be cast aside quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Missing Element Of Biblical Discipleship

D.D.P.C. · April 26, 2017

The two ministry points that I'm most passionate about are biblical preaching and making multiplying disciples of Jesus Christ. I have been discipling men for over thirty years and I have found that the missing element in most discipleship curriculum and workbooks is the whole area of emotional health. Peter Scazzero's books (he's also written The Emotionally Healthy Church and The Emotionally Healthy Leader) are like Biblical Discipleship 201, 301, and 401. It is essential to know how to study the Bible, pray, share one's faith, etc. However, the emotional health of Christians is often ignored, neglected, and never addressed. Along with other discipleship oriented books - Emotionally Healthy Spirituality will help make a Christian disciple truly whole and holy.As a pastor for the past thirty years In four different churches I have seen many elderly people who have been Christians for many years, but instead of being mature emotionally, many of these people have simply plateaued at the age of 10, 20, or 30 and have lived stuck in their immaturity emotionally for years. Instead of being Christians for sixty years it's more like they have lived for sixty years as a ten-year-old Christian. In this book Scazzero addresses the emotional make-up of people using a plethora of biblical and practical applications. He also draws on historical figures that have much to say about biblical emotions. He also addresses the ramifications of generational sin, familial dysfunctions, and cultural distractions that get between us and our walk with God.The first seven chapters primarily deal with the problems associated with emotionally unhealthy spirituality and the last three chapters give hope through solutions. Using a variety of spiritual disciplines and personal examples Scazzero helps the Christian identify emotional unhealthiness and easy cures based on the Scriptures. For anyone who is passionate about transformation, liberation from bondage, and following in the steps of Christ this book is a must read. It's extremely beneficial to read this book in a small group along with the workbook and DVD that are based on this book. I have taken five groups of men through this book and several of the men have described this book as "revolutionary," "paradigm-shifting," and "life-transforming."I highly recommend Scazzero's books be read along with their workbooks in small groups (men with men; and women with women) for maximum transparency, accountability, and transformation into the likeness and image of Christ.

After having a heart attack at the age of 30, I realised that my life needed to change dramatically. This book has helped me to reevaluate my spirituality, to slow down, and has allowed me to breathe without feeling guilty that I wasn’t “achieving” something. This book is a great beginning point for the journey of emotionally healthy spirituality.
