“Teaches us about dreams, destiny, and the reason we are all here.”—Oprah Daily, “Best Self-Help Books of a Generation”

Acclaimed illustrator Daniel Sampere brings Paulo Coelho's classic to new life in this gorgeously illustrated graphic novel adaptation–Discover the true power of trusting your intuition, honoring your instincts, and tapping into your innate inner wisdom

Combining magic, mysticism, wisdom, and wonder into an inspiring tale of self-discovery and spiritual healing, The Alchemist has become a modern classic, moving millions across the globe and transforming the lives of countless readers across generations. Helping them find inner peace, strength, gratitude, and a deeper, divine connection with themselves and the world around them.

This story, dazzling in its powerful simplicity and soul-stirring wisdom, is about an Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago who travels from his homeland in Spain to the Egyptian desert in search of a treasure buried near the Pyramids. Along the way he meets a Gypsy woman, a man who calls himself a king, and an alchemist, all of whom point Santiago in the direction of his quest. No one knows what the treasure is, or if Santiago will be able to surmount the obstacles in his path. But what starts out as a journey to find worldly goods turns into a discovery that the most valuable treasures are those found within.

Lush, evocative, and deeply humane, the story of Santiago is an eternal testament to the transforming power of our dreams and the importance of listening to our hearts. No matter where you are in life’s journey, allow this profound fable to awaken you to the beauty of the present and the hope of the future, and what it truly means to be human and at peace.

Year after year, across generations, Paulo Coelho's profound and enduring work remains fresh and vital for readers today. These pages, presented fully visually for the first time ever, beam with the message that if we trust in ourselves and our inner strength and wisdom, we can navigate all of life’s complexities with grace and resilience. A timeless keepsake gift for spiritual seekers, literary lovers, and comic collectors alike. Discover your dreams and your truth with The Alchemist.

“We are travelers on a cosmic journey, stardust, swirling and dancing in the eddies and whirlpools of infinity. Life is eternal. We have stopped for a moment to encounter each other, to meet, to love, to share. This is a precious moment. It is a little parenthesis in eternity.”—Paulo Coelho, The Alchemist

“It changed my whole life. I realized all of the people who had conspired to get me to this place.” —Pharrell Williams, musician and songwriter

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Brazilian novelist Coelhos 1988 myth-laden story of the shepherd who follows his Personal Legend in spite of assorted travails is rendered into a richly colored and faithful sequential-art version. With Santiago, we see the glories, the mysteries, and the threats along his way from the Andalusian pasture to foreign cities to Egypt; experience his devotion to reading and his attraction to mysterious women; and watch as he reads omens with the help of magical stones and other artifacts given to him by the various wise men he meets. Although the landscapes, city crowds, and animals are gorgeously rendered, the faces can be jarringeven in his youth, Santiago (and everyone else) has dark lines awkwardly scattered on his cheeks and forehead in lieu of expressive changes. Because facial close-ups are essential to our seeing Santiago and to what Santiago sees, this is disconcerting, but otherwise, this adaptation provides a long-popular novel an interesting new life. --Francisca Goldsmith

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!!

In my head, not only could I hear music, but tended to see living scenes - like a movie. So when the author made an announcement that his book was going to be published into graphic novel format, I was excited for the new readers (kids that prefer story telling through images more than text or in addition to text). Curiousity led to wondering how the artist's pictures would paint the scene where Santiago turns himself into the wind, and how my favorite character, Melchizedek, would be portrayed. Then several months of waiting began. Boy, it's not easy. It doesn't get easier waiting for Paulo's new books. The release date of November 23, 2010 seemed a long, long way off.But the waiting became fun, an adventure in itself, for many of us. Then, on November 22, my copy arrived!Well, without spoiling the fun, let's just say that I wasn't disappointed!! Magic on every page, simply brilliant. Actually, I'm thrilled. Can one be more enthusiastic than that?Happy Birthday to The Alchemist Graphic Novel and Happy Reading to previous fans and new ones! This was a dream come true for Paulo Coelho. And we all get to enjoy it, WOW!I recently purchased another copy as a gift for my daughter's boyfriend. Overnight he had already read half the way through, and wished he also had a copy of the novel. And was really glad that I had taken a copy of the novel along too. You have a new fan Paulo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Find Your Personal Legend

B.C. · February 5, 2020

"The Alchemist - A Graphic Novel" is food for the mind and the soul. I just finished reading it, and it was a marvelous journey. It is an incredible collaboration that defies description. (It is an illistrated interpretation of Coelho's story "The Alchemist.) It is what I needed, right now, at this point in my life.I absolutely could not put this book down. The beautiful imagery, the intense colors, and the magical storyline grabbed me and would not let me go.The story follows the life of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd. He is happy with his life, but he ends up on a search for treasure. Along the way, he meets many different people, and is placed in many different situations. Each has something to teach him on his journey to find his own story, his "personal legend". He becomes, essentially, an "alchemist" in his own right. The original book (in text) is a classic - as is the graphic novel version!

4.0 out of 5 stars Graphic means comic-book format!

Read the text version of this book on loan from a friend. Ordered one for myself, but I didn't notice it was the GRAPHIC version. My fault, but it was interesting anyway. Flashback to Classic Comics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really beautiful illustrations, Compliments the book well

D.P. · December 7, 2012

Well, since I had already, many times, read the actual book when I learned there was a graphic novel version I had decided that it'd be cool to see it since I loved the real book so much. Well, I haven't read all of it but I have to say that it really compliments the story; the best part is that when a book is turned into a graphic novel sometimes they ruin the mystery, the letting the reader decide what they look like, etc. part, by creating an illustration of a character or setting that the user/read made so much more beautiful and with the case of this, IMHO, what they did was good because it didn't try too hard and it ended up coming out pretty similar to the book. The only things, specifically, that made me feel off about the book was some things seemed too modern for the time that I felt like the book was set in, but I guess that could be blamed on my own doing. E.g. The illustrated gun, but that was all I can't think of off the top of my head.I'd definitely recommend getting this or getting a hold of it from/at a library, but probably only after you've read and liked the actual book. :D

5.0 out of 5 stars I was Santiago before Santiago existed ...

Z. · March 21, 2014

I also departed from Tangier to cross the Sahara and discover the tresors hidden in Africa .. more likely I had an adventurous young spirit already at 18 ....but I also left in search of something that I already had in myself and that found back when I returned to Tangier ... I started my adventure the 26 March 1955 ... that was a long time ago ...But it was a life time adventure with only 18 years old others died trying to kill others (the enemy) for the same reason the enemy is trying to kill him for to gratify all the politicians that young men must die for their country and keep them safe with their expensive pay packs and perks. When we are young men we can be quite stupid but I was not one of them. Too mature for my age and too intelligent .. I only realised that late in life!. 5.0 out of 5 stars A graphic novel

J. · December 6, 2017

I actually didn't realize this was a graphic novel. I thought it was a written piece of literature. Then, I open it to find a very well illusttated story that sucked me in and is very much like the written story. It seems to capture the essence of the literature and compels you to keep reading. All in all I am glad that I got what I did. Iread the entire thing in a day, refreshing and recapturing the feel and major themes of the story with some helpful visuals. It's ironic really, like the universe conspired to refresh my memory and remind me to pursue my personal legacy in a visually pleasant way.

Letras maiores

S.G.Z. · January 1, 2024

Eu já conhecia a história do livro e queria ler essa versão em quadrinhos. Os desenhos são ótimos, mas acho q as letras das legendas poderiam ser um pouco maiores, pois fica um pouco difícil ler no celular.
