I was toying with buying this portafilter for my Casabrews coffee machine for quite a while and, now I have it, I'm so glad I did. It's a really good upgrade and very well made.So firstly I was not fully certain that this would be compatible with my machine. I have the 3700Gense, which appears to be no longer available, but is identical to the gaugeless 3700Essential which they do sell, other than, obviously, the gauge itself. I'm happy to report it fits the 3700Gense just fine.The first thing you notice when unboxing is just how heavy this new portafilter is. Unlike the portafilter that comes with the machine, it has a distinct heft from the wooden handle and stainless steel body, despite being bottomless. The wooden handle has a quite tasteful Casabrews burnt into the handle. I would have preferred plain wood but it looks quite nice anyway. I may eventually find a washer to put between the handle and the body so that the logo is downwards when tight, but it's fine as is.Attaching the portafilter to the machine is easy: the three prongs have a gentle slope to them so it tightens up as you rotate it into place. I have noticed that it oversteps centre by a few millimetres though, when fully locked into place. This doesn't really bother me as I only fully tighten it during dispensing: when stored I can leave it fully centred. The handle is also substantially longer than the original, so protrudes a couple of inches further forward. Not a problem for me but something to consider if you have a small workspace.The portafilter itself is quite bit deeper than the one on the stock portafilter, but this leaves room to place the included mesh filter on top. The mesh filter keeps the coffee grounds off the dispenser, and is trivial to remove and clean, so I tend to use it, though I would never have thought to buy one separately.The bottomless nature of the portafilter means I tend to get a little more splashing around the cup than on the stock filter, but nothing to complain about: after a second or two the flow centralises. The coffee tastes great, as usual.Removal the puck is so much easier with this portafiler than the stock one: I used to have to bang the stock one seven or eight times to get the grounds out – which had caused the plastic handle to come a little loose – whereas, with this new one, it pops out with a couple of light taps. It's also much easier to clean as there are no hidden crevices.

The product description says use 17g for a double espresso, but the box it comes with says use 14g max. So which one is it ?Solid weighty product indicates high quality. Currently using it with my 3700 essential and it fits perfectly. Not the highest quality puck screen.

Purchased for use with a different machine (not Casabrews). Fits tight.Solidly built. Basket holds in very firmly. The wooden handle is attractive, and the puck screen is a welcome addition.Easy to use and clean, I typically just run my machine through it empty (no grounds) to rinse, and then wipe.

I've broken this review into sections for clarity.Product looks - this is a nice look with the wooden handle and feels nice in hand, would have been nice if the casabrew logo was central on the handle though!Use - I was expecting a better quality coffee with this item but to be quite frank the difference from that supplied with the machine is neglegable. I agree this can help you dial in the grind size etc but as a result you can't really use pre-ground coffee, if you do the coffee does come out unevenly and so if you don't grind your own beans I would avoid this product.Coffee removal - the best part about this product is how much easier it is to remove the old coffee from the portafilter, it pops out way easier that the original one which was a pain!Quality of coffee - you do need to ensure you have the right grind size, the coffee has been evenly distributed and compressed in order to get a nice smooth coffee. The taste if honest has not changed at all! I'll continue to try different beans etc but as far as I can tell the final taste is all but the same as the original.Summary - I'm not sure this is worth the upgrade if honest unless you really are into coffee and want to see the coffee come out of the bottom like you see on insta etc. it does help you recognise what you might be doing wrong but if you've already dialed this in you'll find little or no difference. Also stay away if you use pre-ground coffee. I doubt I'd buy this againUpdate* after using this now for a couple of months I can honestly say I'm not sure this works with the casabrew machine! I've tried different coffee, different grind sizes, and tamp pressure etc and nothing seems to work to get an even flow...it's messy and not really worth the upgrade. I'll be changing back to the original as I can still dial in great coffee without the mess!!Update: after using this for a month now I've noticed a significant flaw that explains why I'm having problems! At first I thought my kitchen worktop wasn't level due to the coffee always making its way forward onto the handle and dripping which creates a mess! After checking my worktop (which was fine) and also realising the old portafilter didn't have the same issue I soon realised that the handle on the portafilter tilts downward (see pic) for this reason this encourages water to run down the handle and onto your kitchen worktop! Sadly I gave this too long a chance and as a result I've gone past the return date.....avoid at all cost!

This fits the casabrews machine absolutely perfect and gives you an amazing insight into how your espresso is pulling. The puck screen is really easy to use and saves so much cleaning up after. Its not super heavy but it does feel like amazing quality. Definitely a great upgrade for your coffee machine!
