Collagen, a type of protein, makes up over 70% of our skin and among many functions, it gives skin its structure, and elasticity. As we age, our body's ability to produce this protein decreases. Further, there are enzymes called matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), that break down collagen. Environment aggressors like UV, increases the activity of this enzyme, hence exposure to UV rays results in faster sagging of skin. Retinol primarily helps works by inactivating the MMP enzymes, resulting in increase in amount of collagen in our skin.
