Getting Published: How to hook an agent, get a deal & build a career you love

Description:

About this item:

Your complete guide to getting published in 2021. Includes absolutely everything you need to know about how to prepare your manuscript, get an agent, sign a contract, manage the publishing process and market your work.

"This is a book written by someone who knows what he's talking about. Even better it's written by someone who enjoys what he's writing about and it shows. It is simply and clearly written, with an underlying sense of fun throughout" - Amazon reader review.

So: you've written a book and you want to get it published.

That means you need to know about getting your manuscript prepped for submissions. You need to know about literary agents, and query letters, and synopses, and book proposals.

You need to know what happens if an agent comes back with an acceptance - and what happens if they say, "I like it, but..."

You need to know about agent contracts as well as publishing contracts. And you need to know about the market for books, because that's the market which will determine your future as a writer.

But that's not all. You need to know about how to work with publishers through editing, design, marketing and publicity. What publishers want from those processes isn't always the same as what YOU want, and you have to know when to play nice and when to insist on changes. You have to understand what you can do to market your books effectively - and in a way that works for the person you are.

And look: you're a reader as well and you don't want a tedious textbook crammed with wholesome but indigestible facts. You want a book that feels like a friendly, authoritative and humorous companion on your journey.

Finally, you want (and need) the voice of experience. The voice of an author who has been much published himself - and someone who (as boss of Jericho Writers) has helped thousands of writers on their journey to publication.

On your side from start to finish, this book has been written for you - and with your goal of publication in mind. From one writer to another - good luck!

5.0 out of 5 stars An unravelling of the infinite mysteries of the book industry.

(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } I love Harry Bingham's style of writing - he tells it like it is but always with humour. There is so much helpful information in this book. The best bit for me personally was not only how to get an agent but also what to do when you get one!I must confess that reading this book is an eye-opener for me. As an (unpublished as yet) author, I had no real concept of how the publishing world works and the obstacles an author might face (and it seems there are many). This is a book I shall be re-reading as I journey along the pitted path to publication. (I live in hope!)Thank you Harry.

Another great book, well written and well thought out out. Honest and sincere a must read for any would be author

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful Book to Own

L. · 29 June 2020

I saw the previous version of this book, and had it in my wish list for a long time. When I wanted to buy it I was confused as to why it was unavailable, but I guess I know why now. If you are looking to become traditionally published, this book features a lot of useful information to help you on your way. I'm still undecided on whether I want to take the traditional or indie route, but I am glad that I've picked this up so I bit more understanding of the publishing world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well worth reading for an insight to publishing.

M.B. · 17 July 2020

I found the book very informative. Also quite daunting in its portrayal of the route to publishing. To be quite frank I was so upset by the end of the book I went and cleaned the cooker to find at least something I felt I could do. But, it has given me the incentive to look yet again at my novel with a greater appreciation of what is required. Thank you, (I think) Megan.

5.0 out of 5 stars This may well become my new bible

This easy to read guide to the publishing industry is a must for any aspiring author. Harry’s style is informative; he covers all aspects with humour and honesty. He pulls no punches and wants you to enter this world with your eyes wide open. But you get the feeling he is there to hold your hand every step of the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful, a must read for any new writer

H.R. · 5 July 2020

If you’re looking for a step-by-step guide on navigating the mysterious world of publishing, then this is the book for you! I found it insightful and well written. A must for any writer heading into the slush piles of querying. Harry’s writing is humorous and to the point, in what could have been a dry subject. I’d highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars An expert shares his wisdom in an easily accessible way

K. · 29 July 2020

If you're even toying with the idea of writing a book that might someday be seen (and hopefully read) by total strangers, you need Harry Bingham's advice and insights borne of many years as a successful author and as a well-respected player in this vast and sometimes confusing industry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Find Out How the Publishing Industry Works

P.G. · 19 July 2020

This book is a guide to the "insider" view of publishing. I am not (yet) a published author, but I believe that the insights given here into the motivation and decision making of publishing houses would be a very good guide to new authors wishing to get their work into print. How to persuade publishers to take a risk on what the author him or herself feels passionate about writing is another question- I have yet to finish reading the book, hopefully this is answered in later chapters! Or does one just have to wait for fashions to change?

A must-have for serious writers

(function() { P.when('cr-A', 'ready').execute(function(A) { if(typeof A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel === 'function') { A.toggleExpanderAriaLabel('review_text_read_more', 'Read more of this review', 'Read less of this review'); } }); })(); .review-text-read-more-expander:focus-visible { outline: 2px solid #2162a1; outline-offset: 2px; border-radius: 5px; } Finally! A how-to book on getting published that is a not a total waste of my time and money. If only I had acquired this one book before the thousands of dollars I spent on workshops, conferences, and useless publications, I'd by now be not only a happier writer but very probably a published one. I was so demoralized when I finally found Getting Published that only Harry Bingham's giftedness as an author (I've deeply enjoyed his Fiona Griffiths series) persuaded me to buy yet one more book - one that I was sure would follow the 20 others into the rubbish bin. I'm so glad that Harry proved me wrong! Practical, clear, well-organized guidance through the complexities of the publishing world: that is exactly what Getting Published offers. The fact that it is amusing and encouraging is an added benefit, not one to be under-estimated. So many authors are discouraged by 'the system', but Harry extends a helping hand; take hold and let him guide you to your publishing goal. Harry can't guarantee you'll be published, but if you read this book and follow his advice (and, if you can, sign on to Jericho Writers, Harry's super online tutorials) then at least you'll know you didn't fail because no one bothered to show you the right things to do.

brilliant tips and an enjoyable read - worth the money and time to read

A.C. · 8 August 2020

Enjoyable read (written with a dry wit) with generous insights and tips on how to get published by traditional publishing houses. A read of this book will assist authors negotiate the wild ride of traditional publishing, while warning of the terrors that may lurk on the journey. Also asks insightful questions as to the 'why' behind the 'do'. Thoroughly enjoyed the humour, and the self deprecating yet honest and transparent promotion of other services available through the author's 'other' business - Jerichco Writers (which y the way is a generous hearted and transparent organisation that really does assist authors with all sorts of struggles and challenges.Definitely worth the time to read.

A good book for those with an agent already

J.C. · 5 August 2020

I found the information useful as a good all-rounder in the path to getting and I think, more particularly, being a published author. Perhaps a few literary examples used would be considered a little out of date now. It's good stuff, but more 'large picture' publishing sensibility, than let's get down to the nitty-gritty of a stellar manuscript submission package which is what i was hoping for.

A Must Read if You Plan to Publish

V. · 12 August 2020

Jericho Writers has another winner with this exhaustive look at the life of a published author. Anything you'd like to know about the writing business is covered in this book - and probably a great deal you didn't realize existed. From finishing your manuscript to writing a query letter; from finding an agent to your launch day; and from marketing your book to paying your taxes - everything's covered. Plus, Harry has a wicked sense of humor! Definitely recommend this for any author looking to publish.

Research the subject, readers and the publishers/ agents who would be interested in your story.

E.J.W. · 24 July 2020

This book is a practical guide to all would be authors how to prepare the submission, what to attach and what to expect in return and is full of handy hints. I enjoyed reading it and learned one thing or two even though I am a published author. I would like to compliment the author for sharing his experiences . Thank you.
