The mmi 3g screen is good and the controls work very well. Surprisingly, I do not miss a touch screen at all. For these reasons I did not want to rip into the dash and fit a new wide touch screen as it risked breaking something on the install and just isn't needed. The big issue for me was I could not stream music from my phone. No Spotify on stock setup! Weird as a same age VW golf had no such issue but I promise you, even though you can make Bluetooth calls you cannot use that function for music . I also found the stock map route planning was not as good as Google maps. You can buy a Bluetooth dongle to stream music but the ones that respond to steering wheel controls cost £90. And that is all it does . If I'm going that far I thought it worth spending £220 on a box like this. So so so glad I did. The car still has easy access to all the old menus and functions but now I can use Spotify, Google Maps etc. The cars excellent console controls work with all the new apps. Everything looks well designed and is easy to read. Google maps and Spotify look like they belong. It's taken years off the car. I can switch seamlessly from the stock radio to, for example, Google maps, without issue or getting distracted while driving. Fitting was not too bad. Surprisingly the kit came with plastic trim removal tools but you only need the hook to pull out the climate control dial panel (plenty of YouTube's on this). Radio removal keys are also included. They removed the radio perfectly. Getting the key out of the radio was a bit fiddly. Press hard with a flat head screwdriver blade and wiggle. I filed down the groove to smooth over the corner and no longer have trouble getting the key out. Instructions were very good. Surprisingly clear. Use of English was pretty good.. lots of colour pictures. There is not masses of room in there but it is possible to slide the box in below the stereo. Cables were not long enough to fit the unit in the glove box. I did not have to remove the glove box. On first pairing you need access to the usb. This slides down the back left side. Shine a torch in passenger foot well and look down through the compartment and you should see it. There is a small bit of trim by the passengers right calf which pops off easily. I hide the usb port behind this. In the future I might extend it to the glove box or centre console storage but I use Bluetooth WiFi connection so don't plug in every time. WiFi receiver is like a small thin ruler. It also routes down through the back of the stereo cubby hole. There is plenty of wire. Look forward of the glove box to see a grey foam cover. 3 hand screws and it's off. Route wire along there . I stuck the receiver to the metal trim at the bottom of the glove box. No damage. Stays on. You cannot see it. Signal is good. Once fitted the whole thing came back to life without issue. Whew. Long press nav button to jump into android auto. It remembers it so when you return to the car you don't have t keep setting it up. Music quality is v good. No reduction of quality at all from my B&O speakers. No hiss or crackeles. I pinged them an email checking I had the most up to date software and the response was instant, which s reassuring. If you are thinking about doing this go for it. Check you order the right unit for the media setup in your car as there are some variations. The images in this Bolo ad were helpful. E mail them with any questions. There are plenty of how to guides and the instructions are good. It was not hard to fit. Just drape towels and rags over the centre console and make sure the edges of the stereo do not scratch your interior. This is an easy thing to do when you are plugging all the bits in. Piano black scratches just by breathing on it. Remember a towel! It's all plug and play. Just take your time. Took me a couple of hours, with lots of pausing to check videos and generally taking it super easy. This tech has been around for a few years. I got navionics (like Google maps for sailing) on my boat with a similar unit and it is still going strong three years in. And that's a salty damp environment. Hopefully this car unit will also be reliable.
1.0 out of 5 stars Broke after 2 years. V poor support.
Have had this item installed in my car for just under two years, it has finally stopped working.I had very poor support from roadtop. When I explained the item should be expected to work longer than two years they told me it was out of warranty and I should buy a new one, with a £30 discount.Having reviewed my consumer rights in the UK, I have written to them with the following wording...I have checked my consumer rights. It is expected that electronicothors sold in the UK should have a reasonable lifespan of at least six years. This item stopped working within two years."Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, goods should be of a satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. My rights have been breached because the item you sold me is faulty. I would like a repair or replacement"Please let me have your response in the next 48 hours.Thank you.Previous review from 2021...When it works, it's great.Sound is the same quality as any other device that uses your aux connection. Totally acceptable, but maybe 10% less quality than the radio or jukebox I have in my a5. Good enough for me though. It has transformed the terribly outdated Audi MMI into something much more modern.However... there are glitches.Wireless android auto.I have this set on my phone to autostart when entering the car. 7 times out of 10, it works. And that's great. However, if it doesn't, you are buggered, there's no way of getting the roadtrip to manually connect wirelessly. The screen doesn't have an android auto option, even though it does support it.Update aug 22I have found the answer to this. If the phone is not connecting, go and check your Bluetooth connection in your phone. Make sure it is connecting to the android auto box, mine sometimes didn't.A manual fix, but one that works.Google maps dark modeI am stuck in Google maps dark/night mode. Great at night, but difficult during the day. The settings to alter this on Road Trip and phone make no difference. Am having to use waze for daytime trips. I don't like waze.Update aug 22This is now no longer an issue.Voice detection.First week, this worked brilliantly for everything, music, directions, calls etc. However now I find I am shouting OK Google to deaf ears. Have to manually scroll to and click on the mic icon to get Google to listen. Which diminishes the safety aspect of voice control.Update aug 22This is now detecting my voice. Androids voice interpretation is hit and miss, but it is now aware I am speaking.Bulky cables...It's easy to connect, however the cables are bulky and even though I went to great lengths to tape everything out of the way and tuck into dash holes, I still can't push the stereo all the way in, it protrudes maybe a mm at the bottom. An extra few inches on the cables would have enabled me to install it in the glovebox instead of the dash, which would have been much better.Support.Rubbish so far. I asked a question on Bolo re the above issues and road top responded asking me to email an account to ask for help. To which I subsequent got no response. I can't find a forum or troubleshooting guide anywhere. So, if you face issues, like I have done, you are on your own.Overall, it should be fab, but isn't. I am questioning if I could recommend for this price. I think I would say try an alternative supplier.Update aug 22After a year or so I can say that I'm very happy I have this unit. Yes there are gripes, but I've found work around for them and I am delighted to have up to date Google Maps and Spotify at my command. I never use the Audi mmi now
4.0 out of 5 stars Is it worth it?
Firstly, this is a really good bit of kit. It really was plug and play. It took about half an hour to fit in my older Audi A4 and about an hours playing with time, to get how it works. The unit does hijack the AUX function on your MMI, so if you do use the 3.5mm jack, this will not be the solution for you. I’m not too keen on how it overlays the system and doesn’t stop playback when you disconnect, but to be honest, other than that, it works really well. Wireless connect is very good once you configured it, and sound quality is great. The interface through the MMI is odd given that I’ve only ever used CarPlay as a touch screen solution, but actually you get used to it very quickly. If you want a fairly inexpensive aftermarket CarPlay/Android Auto solution for your car and desperately need your Waze app on your screen (other navigation apps are available), I would recommend it.For me I’m not sure what it offers over the standard unit and my phone on the dashboard, and I did use my 3.5mm jack interface, but that doesn’t stop this being a good bit of kit. It does work, it does do what it says on the tin, and was a breeze to fit!
