Measuring the basal temperature is one of the simplest and most economical tools to evaluate the progress of the cycle and in particular to understand if there has been ovulation. This is because the basal temperature varies according to the phase of the cycle in relation to the amount of progesterone present in the circulation: in the follicular phase, when the progesterone is almost absent, the basal temperature is lower, while in the luteal phase, when the progesterone increases, the basal temperature is higher than the previous phase. On a cycle of about 28 days, around the 14th day there is a sharp decrease in temperature (which was already low) followed the next day by an equally sharp temperature rise that is completed within 48 hours. Methods of use: Rectal measurement: From the medical point of view it is the most precise and recommended measurement method. Carefully insert the sensor into the rectum for about 2 cm. Do not move until the end of the measurement (40-60 seconds). Axillary measurement: Compared to rectal measurement, the measured value is generally oscillating around 0.5 ° C - 1.5 ° C. Before starting hold the arm against the chest so that the armpit remains closed for about 5 minutes. Place the sensor in the centre of the armpit in a stable position, do not move the arm until the measurement is completed (80- 120 seconds). Oral measurement: Compared to the rectal measurement, the measured value is generally lower than about 0.3 ° C-0.8 ° C. Place the sensor under the tongue in a stable position and well in contact with the mucosa, breathe with the nose and do not open your mouth until the end of the measurement (50-70 seconds). To facilitate the comparison between the data collected in different periods, it is always necessary to use the same measurement method. To obtain greater precision it is advisable to extend the measurement for 3 minutes after the beep.
