And I have to say that at first this book was hard going. It took me over a week and several efforts to get past the first four or five chapters. However, once things started happened, and particularly when the Fae got involved and Merry returned to the Unsealie court the book clipped along and I was caught up in the story. Finishing it in a couple of days and late into the last night, I'm writing this at 1:30am after just finishing.Once it got going the story is well written and captures your attention and imagination. The character are clever and believable. Merry is a good protagonist, likeable, nice without being weak or naive. The other far characters all are different enough to stand out in the mind. The action, mainly combat or political manoeuvring is well timed and we'll written. All in all I really enjoyed this, once I got into it.

Having read all of the Anita Blake series, I thought it was time to sample some of Ms. Hamilton's other work. Written in a very familiar style, there is definite echoes of Anita & co throughout, it was an entertaining and enjoyable read. An interesting mix of faerie legend, court intrigue & sex, I will be looking out for the rest of this series.

I definitely knew I was reading LKH. What a fantastic world. This echoes Anita Blake's world and yet is completely new. I often avoid books on the fae because I doe get confused with them so I admit I put off reading this series. I certainly didn't have that issue with book two, in fact I couldn't get it quick enough.

I've enjoyed laurel k Hamilton for a while, although I enjoy a paper book the feel of turning the pages as you escape, I've decided to add them to my kindle

I love Laurell K. Hamilton, and having read her Anita Blake series I was excited for more by this author - I have not been disappointed! Fantastic novel can't wait for the next one! ☺

Not as easy to read as the Anita Blake series. I mean why on earth wound Merry want to go back home, where nobody can be trusted.

Ich hatte das Buch schon einmal vor vielen Jahren gekauft und es nun auf Reisen digital lesen wollen. Es geht um eine starke & sexy Frau, die teil einer Welt mit ganz anderen Regeln ist. Auf jedenfall nichts für empfindsame Leser mit den vielen intimen Szenen. Aber: absolut empfehlenswert!

This is a really good story about a Garry princess. It is the beginning of the saga, which spreads over the series. It’s not really a cliffhanger, but it’s obvious there is more to come. I have read this once quite some time ago, and I am really glad I decided to read it again!

I am visiting another old friend and enjoying the visit immensely. I think this might be the fourth or fifth reread since it was published. I like to leave enough time in between reads so that the details somewhat fade.What I love is the incredibly descriptive writing of Laurell K. Hamilton. Her characters easily take shape in my mind in vivid detail and they are definitely multi-layered with depth.The world-building is consistent and strong. The plots are not complex or overly twisted. They are interesting with enough twists and turns to keep it interesting. While some have complained that they are just soft porn without depth, I would argue that they are being literary snobs and have never read any true porn - I could recommend some if they would like.For pure luxury of your reading senses - this is the book for you.

This book sets the scene for what is to come in the next books. Background on some of the characters. Already wanting the bad guys to die. Some sex scenes. Love it
