Description:

'It's about simplicity being the key to happiness. You'll be talking about it at every dinner party you go to.'
DAVINA MCCALL

'After the last couple of years we’ve faced, I’m sure we all need to think about investing in this book!'
KAIT BORSAY, TIMES RADIO

This book explores ideas around minimalism, simplicity and how to live comfortably with less.

A timely antidote to overwhelm: For those exhausted by busy lives and noisy minds, this book offers a route to calm, clarity and psychological depth.

A reflection on true simplicity: This book asks what we can let go of - in love, work and life - to focus on what truly matters.

Tune out the static and focus on what properly matters. With chapters like How to Go to Bed Earlier and Why We Need Quieter Days, this book gently guides us through the art of simpler living. It is structured, sincere, and rich in insight:

A manual for modern life: Elegant and richly illustrated, it’s a book to keep close - wise, warm, and emotionally intelligent.

A celebration of enough: Drawing on psychology, philosophy and culture, you'll be gently invited to rethink what really matters.

We crave simplicity not because we are simple – but because we are drowning in complexity.

Review:

5.0 out of 5 stars Sophisticatedly written and well-thought.

J. · 28 September 2025

One of the best books I've read.At first I was dubious, as the insights are not something new and in a way predictable. However, what excell about this book is the excellent well-thought wordings that refreshes the pre-existing insights. The writing style and the words choices are what I like the best from this book. They are not just extremely well-written and presented, they are also extremely clever, sophisticated yet precise, to-the-point and aptly highlights the messages. Beautifuly and poetically flow through out the passages. Its one of the books that I will re-read over and over again.Well done to the author(s)

Nice little book, wrote without any fancy wording, straight to the point and leaving plenty of room for thought. Would recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars This review will not do this book justice

M.H. · 16 January 2022

I decided in the new year to make 2022 my year of simplicity and for me, this book was released at just the right time. I found this book so profoundly thought provoking and I had to consciously pace myself to reflect and take on board each chapter as there’s just so much valuable content in here.A really quick read but a book to keep and read periodically or when the need arises.

3.0 out of 5 stars A strange book

b. · 13 February 2025

The author seems to think their life experiences are universal, but they're not. Which makes a lot of the suggestions irrelevant or even weird.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super book

I found this one of the best School of Life books.

5.0 out of 5 stars simples

When we stop rushing to do the next exciting thing, or buy something to add to our pleasure and sit and feel the wind on our face, the leaves fall gently to the ground and the rain form small puddles in the path, then we will have gained pleasure in the simplicity and beauty of a life with less but so much more. It’s a conundrum, but that is what this book is about.

Applied stoicism. Great tool.

J. · 27 January 2025

A Simpler Life by The School of Life is an excellent introduction to Stoicism—though the book never explicitly calls it that. It goes beyond merely explaining the philosophy and focuses on practical application, showing how adopting Stoic principles can lead to greater calmness and serenity in daily life. What I appreciate most is its emphasis on stepping back from the relentless pursuit of more—a pursuit deeply ingrained in our capitalistic culture here in the U.S. This book invites you to pause, reflect, and focus on what you already have instead of always striving for what’s next.As someone with a background in philosophy, I found this book to be both accessible and insightful. It doesn’t assume any prior knowledge of Stoicism or philosophy, which makes it perfect for the layperson. Yet, its practical approach makes it equally valuable for those familiar with Stoic ideas but looking for guidance on how to actually incorporate them into daily life.I’ve been consistently impressed with The School of Life’s books, and this one is no exception. It’s a thoughtful, grounded read that encourages a calmer, more reflective way of living—something we could all use a little more of. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a different perspective on how to live with greater purpose and contentment.

Lots of good advice and truths.

This book has helped me and my girlfriend to take a second look at our lives and start to change all the unconscious bad purchases and choices we have made.

Basico pero bueno

M. · 31 December 2024

La verdad no sentí que daba mucho el libro, da consejos básicos que luego son buenos recapitular. Por lo tanto si es de los primeros que lees del tema, pues te va a gustar

A must read in this age of noise and complexities

How beautifully does it cover the things we see but miss to notice, we feel but miss to process. It's been a while that I have looked forward to my time ahead in life. This book makes me do it. I ll be coming back to this, time and again. Thanks, Alain.
