Tip 26: Knowledge and experience and more important than gear. You are constantly learning.

Tip 79: Check the weather forecast before you swim. Be prepared to change your plans.

Tip 179: If you're heading for a remote or adventurous swim, leave your route with someone you trust. Give them planning timings, locations and the contact details of any other group members. Have a plan with them that involves checking in on return, and then set a process to follow if they have not heard from you.

Tip 246: A vibrant ecosystem with biodiversity is usually a good sign that water is clean. Look for wildlife or evidence of wildlife: birds, dragonflies, flowers and fish.

Tip 450: Ice is sharp, skin is soft. Thick ice cancut you, so use gloves to move slabs around. Once you break ice, use something to clear it away from the channel or hole, such as a lightweight snow shovel.

Tip 680: If reeds trap you, elevate your legs and swim on your back, making wide, sideways motions with your arms.

Tip 797: Don't pee in your mate's borrowed wetsuit.

Tip 829: Use your tow float as a bag on long journeys - they often have a capacity large enough for shoes, clothes, snacks and phone.

Tip 971: Inform the coastguard beforehand if you are using lights out at sea.
